Two days in the hills
on: March 01, 2016, 10:59:06 AM
Got back from a couple of days hiking, going from Fort William to Kinlochmore via Glen Nevis.  We did gain a bit of altitude at one point, but deemed the snow conditions on the other side of the hill too treacherous and so we came off the hill and took the long way round.

We made ourselves comfortable for the night next to a ruined cottage.

Mmmm...breakfast.

Heading out to Kinlochmore.

There's always time to stop and admire the views, especially with such nice weather.

All-in-all a very nice couple of days in the hills, even if the nights were on the colder side.

Cheers gents. :)

Uhh... that bridge looks a bit dodgy :ahhh

Spectacular view :tu:

The Glen Nevis "wire bridge" is quite infamous. >:D

borrowed pic

The fact it climbs quite a bit and ends up around 2-3m over the water make it feel pretty precarious, especially with heavy rucksacks on.

Mmmm...breakfast.

Forgive me brother but that looks like a cracker with deer droppings.LOL.

Perhaps you could explain that substance you referred to as breakfast.

Your excursion looks interesting. Thanks for sharing.

Lol.  No, not deer droppings, that's a chocolate chip flapjack (British version with oats and syrup) and a Peperami sausage. Adds up to sugars, carbohydrates, fats and protein.  Not healthy, but good hiking food IMO.  Oh, and coffee.  Instant coffee was there to wash it all down.

That sounds more appetizing than it looks.I do draw the line at instant coffee.

I grind coffee beans and place them in watertight containers before I leave.I also carry a small cone shaped fine mesh screen.I then place the screen over the cup, place a teaspoon of coffee into the screen and pour boiling water over the screen. Now that's a real cup of coffee.

Not, I suspect, quite as tired as we were after walking it. :D

Did I mention the frozen boots?  On the second morning our departure was delayed by a bit as we had to wait a while for boots to thaw out enough to get them on our feet.  It's a lesson I've learned before so I wasn't quite so bad, but if there is a chance it'll happen then it's best to leave your boots wide open so as you can at least get your feet inside, if not properly laced up.  That way the warmth of your feet can help speed things along and you can at least move around.

Hi Gareth

Thanks - But ..... Homesick !!!!  :(

I was crossing that bridge with a very petite (but fit and strong) friend of mine in her early days of Scottish mountaineering
In those days she was very timid and was especially scared to cross that bridge...

She later went on to become a Grade V/VI ice climber and one of the few female members of the SMC (Scottish Mountaineering Club).
For non UK/non climbing members - This is a very, very exclusive climbing club, with very, very high entry standards - in terms of your mountaineering achievements and selection. It has a very illustrious members, and past members list - basicially all the greats of Scottish and British mountaineering)
- So the girl done good !!  :tu:  :)

But back to that day - We decided to cross the bridge one at a time, to minimise bounce and risk etc etc
My friend went last and was about half way across when some members of the local mountain rescue team arrived at the far end of the bridge on a training excercise.

They all stomped straight onto the bridge - and started to cross immediately
Poor old 'R' in the middle was bouncing around and flying all over the place
We all fell about the floor

But she made it!!
