The Shard and the Artifact
on: March 02, 2016, 04:19:02 AM
I have saw a thread or so about these 2 but nothing to recent. I would like to know who all carries one and what do you think are the pros and cons about these little guys.

I have both and my favorite of the 2 is the Shard :tu: I EDC it for work everyday.  I love how light it is and have used it quite a bit over the last few years. It just seems to disappear in my pocket until I need it.  I even like the Phillips head driver on it and have used it as much as the pry bar on it

I carry the Artifact occasionally and I know being longer the pry bar end would be much more capable but I just don't have the love for it as I do the Shard  The Phillips end seems to be pretty well the same but I don't think I have even used the exacto blade on it ever as I always have a knife :climber: :multi: I still think it is nice enough to carry occasionally and that is quite a comment from me as I don't tend to carry something unless I find it very useful and usable ;)

I do like the Artifact, not as much as an EDC tool, but when helping out at a move or paxcking stuff for shipping, it´s a handy tool.
My Dad liked mine so much that he "borrowed" it, followed by a request for a pack of spare blades... I think my only chance to get it back is to buy a new one.
For EDC, it´s a bit big for the Keyring, IMHO. The Shard rides better there, but I usually have the Shards functions covered by a 2 layer SAK and my MP 600, so it would be redundant.

I only have an Artifact. Don't carry it much because I don't have much need for prying and my usual SAK covers my screwdriver/cutting needs. Still, I preferit over the Shard (that's why I bought it).

Can be a nice keychain tool, small enough not to bother you and capable enough for several diverse tasks.

I've been thinking of getting one of these just to check it out. It seems like a useful, pretty much bomb-proof tool to keep on a keychain.

Big Shard fan here  :tu:.  Sadly I lost mine, one of the only tools I've lost actually.  It's a great tool that is very handy when needed.  I see a lot of broken knife tips when at the local flea markets that could have been saved by having something like this.

There are some small issues but those are inherent in this type of tool IMO.

Size, its small but punches well above its weight class.
Phillips, I have found it to be very capable in most applications.
Pry, the fact that its not flat makes it terrific in this capacity.
Flat driver, this may pose some problems on smaller screws I've found.  Works better on med to large ones.
Bottle opener, don't use bottle openers.
Carry options, I carried mine on a keychain.  I found the shape for carry a little awkward when attaching a keyring but it wasn't horrible.  I paracord wrapped mine which helped when using.

All in all the tool is a good companion for stuff that your knife should never do.  It has additional tools that compliment it well and that are functional.

I have always pocket carried both ( the Shard much more) but I could see how it would be a bit awkward on a keyring. I also agree about the flat head drivers. I have really only ever used it on some very big screws. I don't imagine it would work to good on small ones :ahhh When I got mine several years back I was skeptical about the Phillips head driver as well but it has proven me wrong time and time again :D

Wiseduck with your love of Gerber (as I have noticed in some of the threads here ;) ) you definitely need to get at  least 1 of the 2 :tu:

I've had a Shard on my keys for years.  It's the only OPT I own, and has been extremely useful. :tu:

Hardly gets used at all, mostly for tearing box tape

My Artifact is still mostly black from lack of pocket time :o I hadn't thought that it would look similar to the way my Shard does :tu: I love they way they look after most of the black has worn off :D

I don't have an Artifact, but there's a Shard on my work keychain. It's a pretty handy little OPT to have around. At the typical price point, it's a great value too. I'd recommend it to anyone.  :tu:

Have both. Prefer the Shard! Dont carry it any more tho. The pry tips are a little thick for my uses. I guess I should thin them down some.   :)
What? Enablers! Are you serrrrious? Where? I dont see any.

Those artefacts look super cool! Where can you buy them from as they seem to be discontinued.

That is news to me as I never thought that they would be :o

Check Ebay, that is the only place that might have them then  :tu:

You know what...steelraven is aquiring both...post haste.

I can assuredly see a use for the Shard, and it woudnt be hard to put a small edge on if ya wanted to do that.

Artifact?? I just LOVE THAT IDEA?  Well why...the Xacto style blades. You can get em scalpel sharp from various sources, and different shapes MAY or may not fit the little thing, but if they don't thats fine with me...

The standard will do fine.

They're like the option of a well made folding box cutter that takes the standard blade...very handy...JMHO...YMMV

No you don't.  They are dirt cheap, and buying both will probably still be a sight cheaper than shipping either of them to Germany will be!

Do yourself a favor and get both.

If you are very lucky, you may even eventually find one of these!  :D

Shard is one of Gerber's best little inventions.

Here's mine, acid-washed and tumble-finished.

EDC and OCD. A wicked mix.

Aww just re reading this thread and missing my Shard.  It's one of the very few if only tool I've lost.  Next order I'm adding one it.  There no reason to ever use your knife tip to pry when a small tool like the Shard is available so inexpensively.

OK so I found one of those Gerber knife/Shard kits@ Wal-Mart and just had to get it since the finish is different than any of the ones I have ever had :D First one is my EDC Shard and it's very nice worn look as that is exactly what it is, completely worn off black finish and I love the look :dd: Next is one I carry on the weekends so the finish is pretty well still intact and now we have the newest edition  One that is very similar to my worn one by the grey color is not as shiny as mine :tu: Still I think I :like: this color to start out with but I think that the black one will have the best end product with all the lettering and nooks and crannys still with the black on them  Either way I am happy with the newest Shard that I have :2tu:
