I have a new Shard on the way and I am really looking forward to it.  It looks pretty cool!

I got a Shard a few days before Halloween, and I really like it so far :tu: The pry function is stellar. The Phillips works really well. Those are the only things I've tested as of writing this post. I intend to see how the cap lifter works later today (I went to Rocket Fizz earlier and got some funky soda pops to drink :tu:)

I think it would be cool if Gerber made a Super Shard (Shrapnel?) That was the exact same as the Shard but just upsized, to be about an inch longer.

The Artifact is a bit longer but Iknow what you mean  A bigger Shard would be awesome :tu: Plus I would prefer a hex driver in place of the hole in it :tu:

I'm not crazy about the Xacto blade with the Artifact.

I LOVE the idea of changing the hole to a hex driver. A bigger Shard may be big enough to carry a bit on board? I'd almost prefer it not have on board storage just to keep the design simpler, but it's an option that I bet Gerber would prefer (it would allow them to ask more $ for it)

Gerber, are you listening? Lol

Probably just the angle that I took the picture because I just went and compared them and they are virtually identical :tu: I say virtually because there may be tiny differences in the way someone finished them in the final grinding and polish before paint :D

So they are identical and the only difference is color?  Interesting.  I was under the impression that the design had been tweaked a bit.

Has anyone noticed the difference in tine length from the original version years ago till now?

Today's Shard has significantly longer tines which I find way more desirable...

That said can someone tell me why gerber still pictures the older version??

Maybe they don't consider it important enough to update their site?

Their IT guys seem to have been a bit busy lately with another project.

I'm not crazy about the Xacto blade with the Artifact.

I defanged my Artifact by removing the blade mechanism.   I also sharpened the pry end on the reverse side (not visible in this photo).

I :like: your version better than the original for sure parnass  The blade would be OK in a bind but I always have more than one on me anyways so taking it off would be more ideal for me as well :tu:

Speak of the devil....

The package with the Shard in it arrived safe and sound today.

I'll have to dig out one of my Shards and do a side by side comparison- it might be the color, but it does seem a bit more elongated and angled than I recall.

And the answer is in!

The tines on the new Shard are indeed noticeably longer than the old one.

Or rather, they are cut deeper.  The entire tool is exactly as long as the previous model, and the angles are identical as well.  You can lay them right on top of each other and they nest in perfectly.

So is the black version painted or BO?

I kind of want a silver one now. Got to support the industry, right?

Just paint I think, as the one in my pic at the top was as black as the one in the middle when I got it :tu:

OK so I found one of those Gerber knife/Shard kits@ Wal-Mart and just had to get it since the finish is different than any of the ones I have ever had :D First one is my EDC Shard and it's very nice worn look as that is exactly what it is, completely worn off black finish and I love the look :dd: Next is one I carry on the weekends so the finish is pretty well still intact and now we have the newest edition  One that is very similar to my worn one by the grey color is not as shiny as mine :tu: Still I think I :like: this color to start out with but I think that the black one will have the best end product with all the lettering and nooks and crannys still with the black on them  Either way I am happy with the newest Shard that I have :2tu:

20161112_195401 by Poncho 65, on Flickr

For reference the top 2 both started out the same color but I hvae pocket worn the paint off the top one and then the new silver one has yet to have but a few hours pocket time yet ;)
