Formula-1 2016

I know I'm not the only F1 fan on the forum, so I'm wondering what you folks are looking forward to in this new season?

Can't say I'm sorry that it looks like Maldonado is out of a seat.  He had his moments of good racing, but he was still a flipping menace on the track.

I've read the new tire rules and if anyone would care to explain to me (in very small and simple words) what the heck they mean I'd be grateful.  :-[

I'm a long time Jenson Button and McLaren fan, so I'm happy that he's staying for at least another season.  However Honda/McLaren don't seem to have made a huge leap forward in testing.  A step in the right direction perhaps, but not a leap. :-\

excitement is gone for me... I pretty much equate watching F1 on Sunday to nature documentaries... something monotonous to nap to in the background.

Jenson Button still races? I stopped following about 10 years ago. I was a Mika Hakkinen fan. I've got a model car of his McLaren-Mercedes when he won his championship. Then it got boring with Schumacher winning every race.

Yup, and he even won the Championship in 2009. :D  He's not quite so baby-faced now.

It might not be a huge surprise to hear that I was a David Coulthard fan so I was always a little gutted that Hakkinen won twice and DC never did.  Hakkinen was a superb racer though and well deserved it.  I still think he retired too early.

The new tire rules are quite simple:

- You create 86 types of different tyres, you pick a handfull of those 86 for each weekend, and make the teams/drivers use every single one of those different types during the race, regardless what race strategy they're on.

- You also make sure all of these different tyre types are so terrible that the drivers can only do one or two aggressive laps on them before the driver has to back down (if not, he will destroy the tyres completely, making them even worse than they were at the start).  By the way, the drivers can only do a couple of fast laps, or they will run out of fuel anyway ...

- If it turns out, half way through the season, that one team burns up their tyres twice as fast as the other top three teams, change the compound so the tyres will last longer for one team, while they will be harder to get up to temperature for the others ...

- And let's not forget, we're going to use a system of complete randomness when it comes to the penalties we hand out, different penalty for the same offence, depending on team/driver, the state of mind of the stewards ...

Does it show that I'm getting a bit frustrated with the direction in which F1 has been going these last couple of years ?

I've been to the Belgian GP F1 at Spa-Francorchamps years in a row (first year I went there was when Damon Hill won in a Jordan, so you guys know I'm talking about a long time ago ...).  But, I'm done with that.  I'll watch the GP's on TV (if they broadcast them), but I'm not going to get up in the middle of the night anymore to see the GP of Japan for example.

When my favorite driver, Kimi Räikkönen ends his F1 career, I'll probably stop watching F1, guess I'll have more time on sundays to get out and take pics of my multitools  ;).

Edit: I don't know the "real" new tyre rules Gareth, I've given up on that a couple of years ago, to make things right I'll post a pic of your favorite driver  ;).

P.S.: Here's a Jenson Button pic, taken by me at Spa, the year he won the championship.

Sorry G :)

I went back to MotoGP last year (after missing the last two or three seasons), thinking I might start following those guys again, since F1 was not my cup of tea anymore.  And I really enjoyed it very much, until the last two or three races spoiled the entire season (for me at least, I can only share my own humble opinion  :-[).  Still, I'm pretty excited about the new season, but if it starts the same way the last season ended, I might stop watching MotoGP also  ::).

If fairness, you've got a good point there TG. Last season was tarnished, and Jorge hasn't been given the respect he deserves for what was a great championship campaign(this from a die in the wool Rossi fan)

I don't think a repeat of last year will be allowed by DORNA though

In regards to how F1 seems to be going those are all fair points, sadly.  Bring back refueling and mechanical grip rather than down-force I say.  That would give us weight based tactics rather than tire wear and better overtaking.

I might try and get into Moto GP, but I'm going to have to rely on you guys to remind me when it's on.:pok:

I saw a survey recently where I found out I= the average F1 viewer. (age, when we started following etc etc)

I AM SO DONE WITH F1!

I have to admit I have a deep-seated dislike of Lewis Hamilton, but I can and have looked past that.

I am however so bored and fed-up with the rest of the show I decided to stop watching.

The politics and BS have just taken over completely, I agree they need to introduce and use technology relevant to today, but they have to limit the influence of the technology on the racing.

I have nothing to add that hasn't been said a million times before, except maybe............watch Formula E overtake F1 in the very near future.....

I couldn't care less about F1 (partly due to some idiots that ruined it for me when I was about 10 y.o ::)) but this seems to be in line with the double standards applied freehanded on various occasions lately...

I have no idea if TG is exaggerating but if that's not the case everybody should just stop watching F1 IMO. I hate arbitrary arbiters

I used to watch it regularly, until about a decade ago... When i started falling asleep whilst watching it, and not really caring about the fact that i did, I gave up.  There was just no action, no characters, no passion.

I do not like any of the current drivers, that I know of from the old days, so i feel no need to watch it again.

I should add, that there is now no free to air channel which broadcasts F1 in Spain this year.

Movistar (Telefonica) has exclusive rights, and as I understand you can only watch it with their TV services.
