DIY Bit extender for Leatherman.
on: March 10, 2016, 09:20:33 PM
I have the LM bit extender and love it.  It will accept 1/4 bits which is a plus. How many of us have lots of 1/4 bits that could be put to use?  I have several sitting around and didn't want to pay for another set of flat bits or another LM bit extender.  Being cheap and having a Dremel are not a bad combination.

This mod doesn't fit into the MUT bit driver only my Wave.  With in the MUT its very loose and will fall out easily.  I made this specifically for my Wave since my MUT is paired with the LM bit extender and flat bits.

Here's what i did.  I measured the thickness using my LM bit extender so I wasn't guessing.  I then sanded down the extender until I got close I then turned to my file so the fit wouldn't be sloppy.

The part of the LM bit extender that fits into the Wave and the shape of the flat bits are 6 sided so make sure to compensate for that.  I just barely knocked off all 4 edges of the extender to replicate the shape of the LM extender.  Go slow and once it began to want to go in use your file to perfect the shape.

My 1/4 driver is nice and snug with no chance of it falling out.  I actually have to give it a good push & tug when inserting it in my Wave's bit holder.

I will carry a few flat bits ( since I have extra ) but will "rely" on standard 1/4in bits for this set up.

The key for me was having a LM extender as my guide.  I also used calipers to measure and plenty of water for cooling the part.

Great work! Did you use the sanding drums to remove most of the metal,  or grinding stones?

Sanding drums.  It may not look "finished" but it sure fits terrific.

Thanks all  :tu:.  It was really easy and with all the extra 1/4in bits I have it made sense.

I agree  :salute:.  It really is a simple mod and adds so much capability to the tool.  I know we can buy the LM one but this is so much more fun to do.

Great thing is if you mess up they don't cost all the much.  Go slow and check fit often.

Hey Aloha007 I have been thinking of doing this for both my surge and wave as I have so many 1/4 bits and drivers kicking around my only question is will the actual LM bits fit this driver ? Or will it only work with standard 1/4 bits ?

Thanks

I'm not Aloha, but aloha anyway!

LM flats bits fit any standard 1/4 bit holder.
Feel free to test it out first :D
