Modding a Leatherman tool adapter?

Has anyone tried modding the original tool adapter so it would fit like the universal adapter? I have and like the old style Wave but finding the universal tool adapters isn't easy nor cheap. Seems there are more of the old style around.  Looking at the pictures it would seem you could trim of the two tabs that stick up and grind off the two bumps and it might work. I have never owned one of either style so hoped maybe somebody had some experience/knowledge of them. Thank!
