Petition to Bring Back 84mm Scissors
on: September 03, 2008, 05:37:53 PM
http://www.petitiononline.com/vic84mm/petition.html

As many of you know, Victorinox has discontinued all 84mm models with scissors.  Of course these are in high demand with collectors, but users like them to.  So, here's a petition (not started by me if you are wondering!) to try and convince Victorinox to start making them again.

Hi Guys,

Actually, I am the one who created the petition. Thanks Def for posting it! :)

I recently spoke to Vic's Product Manager about this issue. There was a bit of a language problem, but he implied that 84mm models with scissors are not even on the radar as a possible future idea.

For those of you who are new to SAKs or unaware of the issue, Victorinox stopped making 84mm SAKs with scissors quite a while ago. Many people prefer the 84mm size though for EDC as it is much better for pocket carry and gives you tools comparable to a full 91mm SAK. These models now go for a premium on eBay and are collector's items.

Now I know there are quite a few people who would love to see some 84mm models with scissors, so I figured why not let Vic at least know that we are out there? At the very least, we should be able to get them to consider the possibility of bringing scissors back, even if just for a moment.

Imagine being able to once again buy models like the old Salesman and Alumnus, or even brand new models like a Cadet with scissors or Small Super Tinker? And I think models like this would do very well with the general public - especially something like a nice colourful Cadet with scissors.

The idea is just to see how many signatures we can get and to then make sure that the right people at Vic are made aware that their customers are interested in this issue.

Though every signature helps, we don't really need that many signatures to make an impression. If we can show Vic that we were able to get a thousand signatures with just a minimal word-of-mouth effort, we can also make the argument that we likely represent just the tip of the iceberg.

I ask you all to please post the link to any forums, websites, blogs, etc., that you can think of over the course of this month. Feel free to grab text from this email for your posts.

I can't promise that Vic will bring back 84mm scissors, but I can promise that you will be heard.

And I also think it will be a heck of a lot of fun to see just how far we can all take this thing... ;)

Thanks Mikko. You may not want one now, but knowing you, I think it's fairly certain that you too will get "the bug" one day in the future when we are all showing them off...  ;)

You definitely have one of the most beautiful examples there, Andy.

That mod will always be one of a kind and I highly doubt we will ever see anything close to that configuration.

If we can get Vic to make scissors, however, it is possible that we might also one day see some sort of 84mm model with both scissors and a saw since they do currently make an 84mm saw (albeit in a rather strange model).

I got in there early at No2.:D  I really like my 84mm Golfer and would love to be able to get a new range of knives to pocket EDC.  The problem might be that with Vic now owning Wenger do they really want to make competition for themselves?

I have wondered about that as well, but I don't think it is the case.

I think that Vic stopped making 84mm scissors prior to purchasing Wenger, so Wenger is not what prompted them to cease their production.

And regardless, the companies seem to be actively competing with each other in many areas, which implies that Vic does not see the relationship in that light.

I think they are instead distinguishing between the 2 companies by targeting different markets with similar products. But that is just a wild guess on my part...
