What's the story with tea in mason jars (you hipsters :P) ???

I used jars as glasses for a short while when I was a broke student (I'm still broke as we speak). Soon I had to get me some proper drinking glasses as I found the jars to be not convenient at all!

The story begins and ends with the word hipster firiki. The answer to your question therefore is; Because hipsters.

Possibly, but I have the impression that, in the US South, serving sweet iced tea in mason jars precedes hipsters. I'm only commenting because, with or without a straw, drinking from these vessels seems pretty uncomfortable!

Funny I grew up drinking from mason jars long before the current abomination called "Hipster" was even a though in a nonexistent coffeehouse/cybercafe.

We were always canning food and had friends that included sugarers and moonshiners. I miss those days and the people in them.
Jars were always available; usually cheaper and sturdier than most glasses too. It is a habit I still follow. Why buy glasses when you have a gross of jars hanging around. That said I do have a few that are strictly for kitchen use.
The photo was the final and weakest dilution of a tea concentrate I was mixing up in the pitcher. I was using the jar as a shaker.. It will probably be mixed again with something alcoholic and served in a red Solo cup with the fish fry tonight.
And that is the explanation form this Texan of Appalachian decent

Trying to keep cool inside, when the outside heat index is well over 100 F.   Pioneer X, and sweet tea in my Range magazine cup.

Have to compromise on the strength to suit the whole family (who like it weaker). Never mind - weak tea at the allotment is better than strong tea anywhere else.
