Want your opinion.
on: March 29, 2016, 10:47:59 PM
So tell me if I am out of line here. I bought that Schrade OTF and it was not locking properly. I asked for a return and the only option was a refund. He contacted me and asked if I wanted a replacement. I said yes. Everything was good. He emailed me asking if I had tried some WD-40 in the knife. He then proceeds to tell me he picked my replacement knife and it was not locking correctly either so he blasted it with WD-40 and now it works great and he is going to send me that one.

Umm.... So your going to send me a knife that was not working correctly so you blasted it with WD-40 and now its good. Uhh.... I'm good.

I told him I will take a refund now. Thanks.

Is it just me or is that a bit disconcerting?

I'd have done the same. Last thing you need with a knife like that is for the lock to fail when you need it most.

Sorry for your bad experenice with the OTF, I feel bad because I was the one talked you into it.

I give mine plenty of dry lube as soon as I take it out from the box, I fired it at least three thousands times by now, never failed even once.

It is a semi complex machine, it has be lube to work.

Is this a conversation with a dealer or with Schrade/Taylor?

Either way I think I'd be going with a refund.  If they refuse, I'd take the knife back and sell it, and try to get my money back.  If what Kampfer is saying is true (and I have no reason not to believe him) then it might have simply been a lubrication issue, but knowing you I'd be certain you will never be comfortable with the knife.

I can see this kind of reaction from a small dealer who needs the money.  A larger dealer like Knife center should make it right no matter what since theit rep is much more valuable than one knife.

If it's Schrade themselves, well I can't say I'm surprised that a smurf organization is ok with treating a customer like smurf, since they are providing a smurf product already.  Why not have smurf service to go along with it?

Bottom line is, you want a knife that works.
If applying lubrication can fix the issue, why not keep it?
I don't see you will depend your life on it, just a cool fun knife to play with, that is why you got in the first place right?

I am guessing you been communicating with the Amazon dealer, when I dealt with Schrade warranty service (I broke the pocket clip, my bad) them just replace a new knife for me, didn't ask any questions. They have better things to do with their time than to troubleshoot and save the company a few bucks

I was in communication with a third party seller who sells on Amazon not Schrade themselves.

Yes it may or may not be a lubrication issue, but regardless the knife should work properly right out of the box. The seller fiddling around with knives not working properly (possibly returns) and sending them as replacements does not inspire confidence in the knife or the seller and is a bit out of line in my opinion. I will never be happy with it knowing it may or may not work properly at any moment. On a different note, I am very weird about oils and lubricants on my knives. I do not like my hands or pockets oily and blasting a bunch of WD-40 in my knife is a big no, no for me. I run a lot of my knives dry and if they do get lubricant it is a very small amount. I would never carry or even want to "play with" the knife if my hands get all oily every time I pick it up. There would be no point in even having it then as I would never touch the thing. Yea i'm a huge weirdo I know.  :D

Well yes and no. I do like to play with it, but since I got my Kershaw Launch 4 I have been carrying that every day. its not large enough to be a really effective weapon if the need ever arose. I carry the OTF as my secondary larger knife. If I needed a defensive knife it may be the only real viable option I have with me.

The seller obliged to the return instead of the replacement and sent me a shipping label. Problem is its not pre-paid like he originally offered in our first email. I don't have the energy to deal with this crap again. I just got through with the whole Saddleback return pre-paid label thing. If I have to pay to return this I may just say smurf it and keep the dang thing. If I was not working and extremely busy/tired I would be a smurf and file a claim against him through Amazon, but I really don't care that much anymore and the time and effort is not worth it.

I see your point and sad to see it went down this way.
To be fair, it is a sub $30 knife and yes it requires lubrication and break in after long storage, and some maintainence to work.

Yea. I'm not mad. I don't really care anymore. I will probably just take it apart and carefully lube up just the spring. Also see whats going on in there while I have it apart. I like tinkering anyways.

That would be nice, do that. I am sure you can locate the issue once you open it up.
Don't ever buy from that seller again.

The problem I see with the lubrication issue is that the thing should have been properly lubricated out of the box... it's a brand new knife, why wouldn't Schrade lubricate it? It would make it work better for any of the foot traffic customers that would try before buying and keep everything rust free from point of manufacture to point of sale as well.

I would take the refund and walk away, but at least the guy was honest with you. He didn't really have to tell you the only reason the knife was working was because he hosed it down with WD-40. He gave you the option to refuse the replacement with that knowledge, so you came out ahead anyway  :tu:

All modern Schrade stuff's made poorly and at a far cheaper price point than the old USA made stuff.  I avoid it like the plague.  Take the refund.

Feel no love for Schrade around here, but here is the thing.
For average joe like me to get an OTF, Scharde is the only game in town.
Not like microTech or Benchmade care enough to develop a design like Scrade did for us.
