MUT and Signal random pics and chatter.
on: April 01, 2016, 12:31:30 AM
I noticed a few things I like about these tools after a day with them.

Hammers.  I like how the MUT is part of the frame.  I like the 1/4 driver on the Signal.  I like how the Signal is flat at the carabiner opening end.  I like how the Signals hammer is wider at the top.

Clips.  I like the MUT clip ( I have the Ti one ).  The Signal clip is very handsome with great lines.

Tool Lock.  I prefer the MUT locks placement.  The Signals lock is on the back of the hammer which is eh.

Design.  They are good looking and very nicely designed tools.  I really like how the awl was designed into the Signal.  Great use of space IMO.

Thats it for now.

I've spend weeks convincing myself of the fact that I don't need/want a Signal, and now you start a topic like this ...  :twak:

My birthday is still a couple of months away, but I've got a feeling I already know what I'd like to get ...

I'm still really on the fence with the Signal.  I love my MUT, and I'm not sure if I see the Signal fitting in with the MT's I have now.

How easy is the Signal's bit driver to use, compared to a Wave?

Great comparison and pics bud :tu:  The Signal blade is beefy.  I didn't know its hammer was wider than the MUT's.  The MUT intrigues me, but it's just too big and heavy.

The Wave and Signal bit drivers appear to be the same.  They work the same.  The MUT has a bit of a different designed bit driver which also works great.

In the picture I have the MUT laying on top of the Signal and as you can see the Signal actually has more reach when using the standard LM bits.  Keep in mind the MUT does come with the longer bits as well.

Using the bit driver on both the MUT and Signal the tool must be opened unlike the Wave.  Ok I guess you could use the Signals bit driver with the tool somewhat closed but........

After a few sips of coffee and some thinking.  Once the idea of the Signal being marketed as a whatever is put aside the Signal its a pretty nice option for those not needing the gun related specialized tools of the MUT or the simplicity of the Skeletool.

No it doesnt have scissors but neither does the MUT or Skeletool.  Take away the ferro rod/whistle for just a sec and what do we have?  Better plier than the Skeletool and for some better than the Wave.  Thicker blade and a fricken hammer with 1/4" driver.  It also has a pocket clip for goodness sake.

Once the idea is gone about what this tool was marketed as I'm begging to see it differently.  Lets agree that these tools, MTs in general are what we decide they are.  They can be pressed into any situation where we need a non dedicated tool.

Ok more coffee and I'll return.

I do believe there could have been some nice additions to the Signal to make it a great allrounder.  Like the MUT with 4 outside tools the Signal could have had one additional tool opposite the pocket clip.  We would have debated as to what tool but it could have been done.

IMO I'd have liked to see the diamond file like the Wave there.  Then maybe put a place for an extra bit like the MUT where the current file is.

I think the Signal could have been/is a really great option for a scaled down MUT but less military or gun based.

More coffee......   Or maybe less coffee.

I've been thinking the same about the signal. Remove a few pieces and you have a good work tool. Nice write up.

Nice write up Aloha!   :salute:

IMO to make the Signal better, they should have used the adapter from the Surge that lets you have the saw and the file!  That would have been nice!  :)

I wished LM would put the diamond file on every MT that they have if a file is possible :gimme: Also if they made them removable similar to the Surge it would be a lot handier as well

Off to add the Signal to my Christmas list now :twak: :D

I totally forgot you switched out the saw for file  :tu:.  I was thinking why did they choose  they had the room opposite the clip.  Make the pivot bigger and add that sucker.  Sure that side would have needed some rework but I think it would have been brilliant.

I guess they were fixed on their marketing for this tool.  This is where I feel the tool missed the mark and still does.  Its a mini Surge more than whatever they wanted it to be.

That would have been another great idea from LM  :tu:.  Don't choose what to put just add the exchanger and let us decide what tool to run it with.

Heck for that matter they ( LM ) really needs to get that adapter onto other tools.  They have such a winner in that piece of engineering.

Some great philosophical musings over the MUT, a tool without peer in its class.

Here is an older thread rambling about the Signal.  After rereading this I am still very much feeling the same about the Signal.  What a neat offering from LM even tho I initially took a few swipes at them.

The MUT is a good tool even for those who dont have firearms.  The Skeletool has many fans and is a great simple carry option with some nice features.  Like I said, take away the marketing of those tool and the removable bits and what do we have?

Tool Lock.  I prefer the MUT locks placement.  The Signals lock is on the back of the hammer which is eh.

Design.  They are good looking and very nicely designed tools.  I really like how the awl was designed into the Signal.  Great use of space IMO.

I also loved how they were able to squeeze the awl into the spot they did.  It's also cool how you can use it with the handles closed because they cut a little area off the hammer.

I would love a Signal 2 where they just put outside tools on the other two spots like a wave or a charge.  That way it could have the metal file, AND you could do away with the lousy combo blade and have a dedicated PE blade and a dedicated serrated blade.
Once they did that they would just have to find some way to fit a tip-down-carry pocket clip like they have on the MUT and it would be perfect.

G'Day,

Nice write-up Aloha, and some very good thought and comments.

I used to carry the MUT most days until I got the Signal. Now it is my EDC 99% of the time. The tool-set it has has been good for me. I swapped the saw for a file and it has been serving me well ever since. The new one I got will stay stock.

I agree with most of the comments regarding the blade - PE will be nice, blade exchanger will be cool, but it will need to be reworked for the Signal chassis, with the file / saw in it is to long and cannot close properly.
The way I see it it can be an excellent URBAN tool with a few slight changes:
Most tools "we" use / want for light duty: blade, one flat screw driver, a philips driver, an awl and a hammer and the diamond file. Plain and simples. It will be light and with the clip very pocket friendly. This should get us out of most daily stuff. Off course there are the heavy duty tools with lots of stuff in. And they have their place in the MT world too.

I think the last few years and the two challenges have changed our viewpoint on the Signal. I think it is still a good tool. It is not a Wave and certainly not pretending to be one. If that is one's requirement then the Signal is not for you.

Cheers,

Pete
