SwissTool RS is on the way!
on: September 04, 2008, 03:24:11 PM
I have a Leatherman Core, and I ordered a SwissTool RS. The SwissTool offers the same complement of tools as the Core (except a file) but adds scissors. I'm also intrigued by the high-polished finish, which will give me an edge on rust resistance. I'm not sure which is the beefier tool, so we'll see how they compare. With the SwissTool RS, I may be able to stop EDCing the Super Tinker (I carry the S.Tinker mainly for the scissors, and EDC the Core for the other tools).

I needed the scissors,  and the serrated knife would get more use than the file, so the RS it is. :)

Hat's off to this forum, otherwise I wouldn’t have given the SwissTool a close look.  :salute:

Nah never bothered with the CS, I might pick up the extra's bit's and bob's seperately at some point, but I didn't want all the bulk that a CS would entail.

TBH I normally have a SAK with a CS on it with me anyway.

I never have quite understood the Swisstool RS setup.  I really like the look of the rescue blade, and it would be great for use on seatbelts or rope.  However, I look at the RS as something that you might keep in a vehicle and, if that's the case, why would they drop the metal file for the serrated blade?  It seems to me that, for a tool to keep in the car, you would rather drop the scissors or the wood saw for the RS blade.

Am I crazy?

Anyway, I hope you get on well with yours.  Let us know what you think of it!

I'm not really attached to files.  Files get dull, you can't sharpen them, and they love to trap moisture...resulting in rust.

Just like some folks like dedicated drivers over bits, I guess the same thing goes for files.

I don't quite get the RS either. I can understand the serrated blade swap, and I imagine the scissors are for cutting bandages, thread, etc. But couldn't they have found something better to drop than the metal file?

Instead of the RS, I wish they had just really beefed up the serrated blade (maybe as a sheepsfoot) and added scissors to the existing toolset. Just one model with everything, instead of having to pick and choose.

Yes, but what if you regularly need a file? That's where the Surge got it right IMHO - a swappable file is a great solution to that problem...

Sure, everyone's opinion on the perfect setup is different.  That's a good thing!

I was just trying to point out that a file would come in handier making repairs to a car than a wood saw would (saw wood saw would....)  :D

I think they were trying to "cover" the bases. RS=Rescue and Survival so some stuff for this, and some for that.
I really would have liked a file too. :-\

hmmm...  Now there's a good point.  A wood saw would (saw wood saw would...  :ahhh) at times come in handier in a survival situation than a metal file.

all good points and food for thought..which is why I come here. :)

The MT for me is more for the outdoors, and generally getting by in my day-to-day life. I'm an urban dweller who goes camping. As such, I've never been in need of a file. I've got other MTs with files, so I can bring them if I see the need.

But scissors I use almost daily, and a SwissTool with scissors will come pretty close to ideal for me. What I'm looking for: awl, pliers, scissors, serrated and straight knives, wood saw, phillips, small and regular flat drivers.

Replaceable files would rock.   So would a greater selection of files.
Triangle files.  Rat-tail files.  All sorts of big and little files.
