Fleamarket-find of my life
on: April 01, 2016, 07:17:47 PM
... still a bit shaky, so sorry for typos and bad pics, but you'll see why...

Some of you might remember that thread about the infamous Victorinox Walther-knife that I thought to have seen at a local flea market.

That flea market pauses in winter, but today was the first time this year- we planned to start quite early, but since I was on a great MUSE-concert in Munich yesterday, I just couldn't leave my bed early... and that was my luck!!

We arrived quite late, about eleven-ish, at the fleamarket and I quickly found that seller again. Had, as always, some knives, but no Walther and he couldn't remember if he had ever sold one. Well, that's your luck I thought, but I hadn't been too sure about that Walther anyway.

The rest of the market was nice, the first fleamarket in the year is always better!

I came across one of the sellers who always buy huge batches of things, often from capsized companies or old stores. One of the sellers had heaps of rusty stuff from an old hardware store, owner died - store closed - wife left everything as it was for decades.

Packets of nails, even some brand new antique tools- sealed in waxpaper, some a bit rusty, some like new.

I had to decide how many of the  excellent antique screwdriversif I would take- they were 8 Euro each.
First I wanted to buy two, but I went for three, just to have one in spare...

You only see two screwdrivers in the picture since the next layer in the old box didn't consist of the screwdrivers, but contained 40 very different packages.

Smaller Packages... containing something I had never dreamt of...

See next post...

... the last layer in the box contained these knives, 40 in total.

I wrapped some back into the paper to show you how the box looked when I took the last ones out, I'd have loved to have an actual picture of how it looked when they were still on-site, but I was too stunned to take pictures when un-wrapping the knives..... the rest of the day saw me googling and talking on the phone.

I bought the box for 250€ straight away, telling the seller I wanted the knives as a gift for friends and family.

1891 Elsener Soldiers, 40 of them.

Spearpoint blade, Elsener tang-stamp, most in quite good condition, only some with a bit of pitting and rust since they were the bottom layer which had caught some moisture.

The wood of the handles of most of them is split and they don't bear the small cross which acted as "Waffenkontrollstempel", so I guess they were originally sold for the German civil market.

Do you know of similar cases?
Please don't ask for a price, I won't sell any of them now, first want to have some time to let things sink in.

What a day!!!!!

Closeup of handles - these are some of the best ones, my "beauties"- pic of the rustier ones follows...
The cracks in the wood are deep, but the scales still sit solid, nothing's loose...

I won't do any cleaning and won't open all the blades- I just opened the waxpaper to find out if it's all soldiers and how affected they were by the moisture.

If I'm not totally wrong, they've spent more than 120 years dormant and I don't want to destroy anything.

Completely spent and about to open another bottle of wine

Tomcat
Who'll keep you informed- pics of all knives together follow, just lining them up on my desk ...

PS: After securing my find with my wife I rummaged through all the boxes and found none more. But I've got the number and address of the seller, will try to find out about that store

Sorry guys, couldn't resist - even the more since an original Elsener Soldier 1891 is on my definite "want"-list, but I fear to never get one.

Had to beadblast, scratch, etch and crack my 125-years anniversary Soldier to get the right look for the pictures though

I am a little suspicious if that is real or not.  It's April 1.

But, if there is the slight chance it actually happened--great find!

Looking forward to an entire gallery of detailed photographs and at least one large one showing this massive find all lined up together in a nice platoon formation of good soldiers within the next week . . . without the wrappings on them.  ;)
