How many of us own the system?

My coworker bought the leather strop, extra extra course, and Blue Sapphire that pretty much completes my kit!

I'll need more honing oil and a better way to clean the metal out but I broke it all in tonight!

Mid Sharpen. I've been sharpening my Wave at 25 degrees now for quite a few cycles.

Threw it all in a FAK bag I had laying around. I never liked the box.

Also, the holder is bent....not sure if lansky would warranty it.

I'm definitely in. Love my Lansky. Last night I was bored so I got my Wenger Tradesman sharp enough to shave with. :D I'll post a pic later, just leaving work.

I'm in too.  I'd give Lansky a call and see what they say about getting the clamp sent in.

Here's my Lansky kit. I suck at freehand sharpening, but this makes me an edge master. :tu:

I may see if I can get some rod replacements well. Or make some.

The aluminum/tin is crap. Way too soft, I'd much rather have the steel versions, apparently the old kits came with them

+1  :tu:

You probably know that the oil ‘floats’ out the metal particles
As I sit at my computer when sharpening I didn’t want to use the oil, so I use the stones dry then clean them at the end with lighter fluid and a cloth
I know this isn’t the best way of using them but it works for me

Also you don’t need to buy special oil for the Lansky, any light oil will work E.g. 3 in one  :tu:

Been playing with my Lansky today
I also use a sharpie, magnifiers and a bright light
And you can use the lighter fluid to remove the sharpie  ;)

Hey NK. That bent arm of the holder will throw off the angles on that side. I actually made a purpose built adjustment jig to straighten them out that consists of a simple piece of angle iron and basic hardware. Works like a charm and does the job quickly. As you use the Lansky more often, you may find that the rear adjustment screw gets in the way of you being able to get a full stroke. I use a socket head set screw instead to prevent this. I also modified the pivot adjustment screw. The stock screw and countersink are at about 45 degree straight angles. I found that when sharpening certain types of blades, especially full flat grinds, I didn't like the way that the top arm fell slightly out of symmetry. It's really a small subtle thing most wouldn't even be concerned about, however, I am very picky about such things. To help remedy this I made the countersink spherical. I also made a new screw which is also spherical to form a ball and socket pivot joint. This allows the arm to pivot at steep angles without things falling out of alignment. I know it may be difficult to understand via words on a screen. The rods, while inexpensive to buy, are also very easily made from materials you can find at your local hardware store if you are impatient like me and don't like to wait. Speaking of rods, I also made an alignment jig to make quick work of making sure the stone and arm are straight and true to one another. The benefit of this is that all my rods and stones are adjusted identically. This is important as you work from one stone to another. If one is off adjustment in comparison to the others, you could be undoing some of your work, doing more damage than good. I also made a tool for bending the rod safely which involves no risk of damaging the somewhat fragile plastic body of the stone. I learned that one the hard way. If you find yourself working with small blades, you may find that the stones won't even make contact depending on the the angle of grind due to the thickness of the jaws. I've modified mine by reducing their thickness, almost coming to a sharp point. While I finish all of my blades freehand, I do use the Lanksy on occasions to set my initial angles on certain blades. Anyway, just my two cents. I hope this helps.....

I would like to see your modifications to the Lansky in pictures, too. I don´t mind if you post here or in a new thread. I especially would like to see how you modified it to be able to sharpen smaller blades.

Oh, and I´m in. I own a Lansky set, too.

I would also like to see your Evil Lansky Sharpener Setup. If you decide to make a new thread, just do future MT.O members a favor, and link back here please :).

Oh, and is there anything you own that you havent tweaked to perfection? The kitchen sink maybe, or perhaps your vacuum cleaner?

I opted to create a new thread as it is rather long with many photos and did not want to feel as if I was hijacking a thread. You can find it here. Hope you find some of it informative.....

I've actually modified just about anything and everything I could get my hands on throughout my life. I've actually been contemplating making a post of such things. Literally hundreds of things, if not more, depending on how far I go back. While some are very complex modifications, some are small and trivial. Many of them have nothing to do with multitools. We'll see.....

I'd be very interested to hear about such modifications. Maybe a dedicated "Evil's random improvements" thread in the Break room?

I have the "deluxe" kit with five stones. Looking to add a sapphire and probably leather strop soon.
I noticed in the catalog that they now have a version with rubber padding on the clamps, but I've never come across one. Anybody have the rubberized version?

Is there an extension for doing single-edged serrations? I've got a couple combo blades that have a regular dual-sided plain edge, and then a single sided serrated edge which is about 40 or 45 degrees. It'd be nice to be able to sharpen those blades.

Charles.

Oh yes the Lansky system, I own it. Mine looks a bit different though...
I have had very good results sharpening with this Lansky system, without creating uneven bevels.

The end twists to reveal four storage compartments for the coarse and fine ceramic rods.

 :iagree:

I use the Turnbox too, I have a sharpmaker also but prefer the cylindrical rods of the turnbox over the triangular sharpmaker ones.

I also have a lansky masters edge (17 degrees) for my kitchen knives.
My trouble is i never show initiative, but that's only because no one has told me to.
