Wave or ALX or MUT
on: April 11, 2016, 07:53:03 AM
So I've got the choice of an ALX, Wave, or MUT for my EDC for the rest of the year (I'll be in Germany, so it's a sort of "no take backs" situation)

Whatever doesn't "win" will likely get sold to free up some capital for the adventure.

Wave - Current EDC, does it's job, fairly no frills, fairly beaten (ie - minimal sale value)

ALX - Crimpers are handy (maybe? Have not tried them), what's the with 2 large bit drivers, no scissors?

MUT - Pocket Clip, lots of cool stuff, no scissors, according to the pamphlet it has crimpers, but so far nothing I've tried with them has worked. I might be lacking technique, or they might be rubbish.

Any thoughts, advice input?

I'd consider putting the scissors on the ALX, voiding my warranty, and giving me the best of both worlds, if anyone has pro tips on doing it without ruining the whole thing,

Locking and one-hand opening is restricted in Germany, so none of those could be carried in public if that bothers you.

I'd take the Wave - more versatile and easier to carry than the others, cheaper to replace and you'll get more for the other two.

I'm working, so if they have a problem with my Leatherman, they're going to be really upset about what's in my car :D

The $$$ is a big motivator. I'm not worried about carry weight, I've carried a MUT before, and no worries. Both the MUT and ALX offer more driver options, which is nice.

G'Day,

Tough choice.

My vote is Wave too. My tool of choice for holidays and going places is a Charge Ti - fancy Wave  ;) and a 42 bit kit. Best selection of tools for my uses though. As much as I love the MUT, I think a scissors is important and a swiss card scissors will fit in one of the long bit drivers slot. The EOD MUT is limited though with the pliers designed for explosives. Maybe change the plier heads over for the trip if you have a spare Surge.

My MUT is not EOD, the crimpers I refer to are the ones below the plier pivot at the top of the handle (below the wire cutters. They're hardish to see, and I had to check the pamphlet to determine if they were "crimpers" or "slightly misshapen bit of handle"

Every day is a school day!!!

I did not know about that "feature"  ;)

What are you going to use the Multi for in Germany?

Seems like a good excuse to get yourself an old-style Surge  :tu:

Then I'll have four tools to choose from....

Same thing I use it for now - Damn near everything when I can't be bothered going back for the right tool, can't feasibly carry all the right tools, or can't be organised enough to bring the right tools.

I do a lot of (unreasonably optimistic?) grabbing with the pliers. The Wave is a "sawn off" due to snapping the plier tips. I wonder if the crimping portion of the ALX would weaken the pliers to the point that, under Sea Monster usage conditions, I'll have a linesman style multi after a week or two.

Freeing up cash mean letting go of the MUT and ALX.  As you said the Wave wouldn't bring much as it is well used.

Wave is my vote simply because it versatile enough to see most jobs through.

Yep I would go with Wave as well   Has a good tool selection, gonna get more cash from the others and if you break it you can use the warranty without any hassle that might occur from swapping tools out to or from the others to accommodate you :tu:

A vote for the Wave from me as well. I'm a MUT lover, but it is lacking in good daily use tools since it has gun related bits taking up space. Now I did add a file to mine, and can carry my Swisscard scissors either on the tool, or in the sheath.

Another vote for the Wave because scissors are very useful. Also it is easy to lose stuff when you travel and this will be the least expensive to replace.

I was kinda hoping you guys would persuade me to keep the premium / flash tools :P

You're all being far too sensible.

We'll let the Economy decide. They're going up for sale, if they don't go to new homes, I guess one had better come with me  :D

(Just for the aussies now - Does this sound right - $150 for ALX new with box and sheath. Played with but unused, $250 for MUT, same thing, played with, but not carried or used, with box and sheath)

Aussie retail for these puppies is about $250 for the ALX and $350 for the MUT. Let's say $200 and $300 on "sale"

(I'm not trying to sell them to you, I'm just asking my Australian compadre's (and Zoidberg, as the situation is probably similar) if those are fair prices)

We are a bit done in by down-under with MT prices. It is sad though!!! Are these prices AUD$?

Good luck with the sales and the trip!

Yeah.
I went to Westfield on the Weekend - $309 for an ALX, and $330 for an MUT  :o :o :o

With a little effort, you can find them Retail for about $270-300

Our dollar is about 75 US cents at the moment, so it's not a great time to be buying American gear.

Have you consider sell the 3 in australia, and buy a new wave in germany? For 80 € you can have a new one, maybe less for a second hand one.

Price are more expensive in Europe than in USA, but compared to australia it's cheap here!
A brand new mut is 140€ (200AUD) with VAT in France for exemple

Guess the wave is the best choice but If you are bringing one I would say the Alx if you can live without the scissors. It´s a little more special than the wave and after one year if use it will have a nice patina. 8)

So for anyone interested.

I chose the LM Wave, a Vic Outrider, and an Opinel no 7.

So far I'm having a great time, and have not found much I can't deal with with.

The only thing I miss is maybe the marlin spike from my Helmsman. I might have to pick up a dedicated tool somewhere.

Sounds like you made a good choice if you are only needing to buy one dedicated tool

How long you gonna be there? Are you going to be able to do any sight seeing  If so have fun
