“Analog” watches with LCD hands
on: April 11, 2016, 10:44:42 AM
I have a soft spot for LCD watches with lay-out with hands (like an analog watch, e.g. Casio AN-100). Are watches like that produced at all anymore? A smart watch just hasn't the same charm.

That's extremely helpful, and I do appreciate it, but I'm not really in the market, I'm just chewing the cud in our new forum. Thanks all the same!   :salute:

I must pay some knives I have ordered instead. ;)

I do collect knives, while for watches I just have more than I need. Big difference! ;)

The reason I like LCD hands is they combine how you read a mechanical watch with the advantage of no moving parts. (They aren't quite as legible from all angles as a conventional analog watches, though, so I guess most people think of them as the worst of both worlds.) I grew up with analog watches, so I read them very much faster than a digital watch.

What's the time there? 6h19m?

Yes 6h 19m 35s.

And if you press the correct buttons the correct number of times in the correct sequence it will give the day month and year and three different alarms and eventually a warning that your battery is running out!!

Seriously though the battery life is quite good (about 2/3 years) with moderate use.

For those who say analog is quicker and easier to read than digital try this one out!

The really evil part of that kind of watch is that it breaks your reading of every other analog watch, since you start checking the direction of the numbers of all watches. I have a friend who has a wall clock of that kind who warned me against getting one, since I thought it was cool with a clock where the dials go “in the positive rotational direction of a right hand system” or what the correct wording is in English.

"Anti-clockwise" is the term. The fun part is when someone asks the time and you show them the watch and see the confusion mount.

When I get really confused I dig out this one and it speaks to you.

(I do have normal watches as well!)

I wanted to use the term which explained why I liked the idea. I would find it natural for watches use the "positive" direction from mathematics and physics.  :)

A quarter to two. I had a wall clock for left handed people like this one for a long time. Everybody hated it except me because they couldn't read the time even after I'd explained them how it worked. I never understood why that was.

Or in plain English, a clock that shows the time the same way time passes: from the east to the west :D

That depends on wich hemisphere you are in doesn it? It always goes from east to west, but clockwise or counter clockwise varies doesnt it?
Up here north it rises in the east , goes south, and sets in the west. (Clockwise)
But for zoidberg, it rises in the east, goes north, and sets in the west. (Counter clockwise)

I hung a clock upside down in a training room years ago, the same thing happened...

Also had a tide clock with time clock backround, hour and seconds hands, no minutes hand.
That one really confused people especially when I would glance at it and say something like "it's time to go".

That's pretty cool!

Never heard of them before, but maybe I'll look into them.  That seems like a nice dress watch.

Yes, Evil even modifies some of his watches. Shocker, huh?  ;) Originally it had a plain bronze-ish face which I modified to my liking.....
