PST 1.5
on: April 11, 2016, 04:09:42 PM
Well since my newest PST II wan't the best thing I have bought in a while  :D I decided to put it and a PST together and get the best parts of both to make a PST 1.5  Yeah I think I will go with that as a name :tu: AT first I was gonna go blade-less because I was gonna have two file in it :o :ahhh I had forgot about an old BO PST blade I had that was snapped off so I figured since it was already shorter I might be able to incorporate it as one the shorter tools  My inspiration was the smaller file on the Wingman :D

First off I had to disassemble both and clean them up before I started ;) I used a couple Kick clips for this

Now for the fun >:D :D Here is the PST I am using for the handles, file, awl and phillips

Now for the PST II which is already getting a bath :D Note the damage on the handles ;)

Well after a good scrub and dry off I figured it was time to reassemble :tu: I put the newer style plier head from the PST II on the PST handles and on one side I put regular file (PST) scissors, med screwdriver turned wood chisel ( :o ) and big flat screwdriver

The other handle got diamond file (PST II), awl, phillips driver and broken blade :D

As you can see the phillips driver was having a wee bit of trouble because of the awl and the knife blade ::)

I knew I was gonna have to modify it some going into this so no biggie ;) Off to the garage and the dremel :D Here is a shot of the knife right when I started on it (almost forgot to take a pic :P

Here it is after a minute or so with the dremel and a comparison of it to a regular PST blade for scale. I am very happy that this blade ended up as long as it did without having to sacrifice anymore blade length to fit in with the phillips and the plier head

I had to grind just a little on the awl so it remained mostly unchanged

I did have to put a new nailnick in the knife though as I had cut the other one off ::) but it needed to be lower anyway to be accessible.  Overall I am very happy with the resulting MT :tu: It just took a little more fine tuning on the knife and a bit of sanding to get the BO off of it and shining it up and it was ready

This was my first major mod as I have done a few blade swaps and took a few apart to clean but this was the first real attempt like this and I had fun doing it and am glad it turned out the way it did  Hope you enjoy :D

:tu: I really appreciate mods because they make the tool unique to the owners needs.  This is a good job at giving the PST a new life and the using up parts that would otherwise just be broken.

I have had that blade lying around for years ( in an Altoid tin with the Kick clips) and as I was preparing for the mod I saw it and decided to try and use it.  I really did get my inspiration from the smallish file on the Wingman though (as I think I said above  )

Nice mod Poncho

Thank you Sir :salute:

I am very well pleased with the way and the size the blade turned out.  It was just small enough to let the plier head clear it and close but still big enough to be very usable  I should have posted a close up of the final product with the nail nick but I was so eager to go and use it I forgot

That is very cool. The little blade is wicked!!!

I think the PST and PST II make excellent bases for customisation.

Cheers,

Pete

Well, looking at this mod I guess my PST with a PST II combo blade swapped in is more of a PST 1.1  :)

Nice job.  It's always nice to carry a tool that has some of one's own work in it.  :tu:

I ended up with a sorta cruddy shape PST II so I thought I would just get the best tools out of it and put with another PST that I had and it has worked out really great  I was originally gonna go blade less til I remembered that broke blade and I am really liking it now and am definitely glad I put it in there  :tu:

I quite like the little wharncliffe PST blade you made.  Looks pretty handy.

The blade turned out better than I had expected  The Wharncliffe blade pattern is probably one of my more favorite blade patterns so I was glad to be able to use that pattern with the broken blade :tu: That shape allowed me to leave the cutting edge as long as possible was and still allow the plier head to clear it
