leatherman sheaths

Hey you guys, I have a question for you. I'm about to buy a leatherman crunch, which is probably sold whithout a sheath. I already have a leatherman rebar whith a leather sheath, so i was wondering if the crunch will fit the rebar sheath. The leatherman website says the rebar sheath is 4'' and the sheath for de crunch is 4,2'', but i think my rebar has a lot of space in there, so i thought it might just fit. Is there someone amongst you who already tried this, or has the possibility to try this?

It probably will work but it may stretch it out as to make it really loose for your Rebar. If you are buying the Crunch new it should come with a sheath. Leatherman does list the Sheath for the Crunch as being 4.2"

The Crunch comes with the 4,2" leather sheath - if it is sold as new.

Just now getting around to checking   I checked the Crunch with both a Rebar sheath and a Blast sheath and it fit just fine Only thing that makes the Crunch bigger than a normal 4 inch LM is the adjustment screw but it fit in both my sheaths with a little play even

I Would also be intetrested in the differencies.  I can see on the web that there are different Molle XL sheaths. But descriptions of the differencies are nowhere to be found.

If I had any molle sheaths I would try and answer your questions guys but I don't have any either I even searched last night on here for info about them and didn't come up with much

I have been thinking of starting a thread with all the variations of sheaths that I have and seeing if we could compile all info about the LM sheaths together like that but I didn't have the time to get any pics of any sheaths yet

Hopefully somebody with a molle sheath will be by to help answer your questions though

I am fairly certain that the leather sheath (factory sheath) I have with my ST300 is the same as my Surge sheath and it has a back elastic pocket for at least one bit card (don't know if two would fit or not   I have the bit kit card that has the bit adapter in mine as it's the one that's needed to use the bits with the ST300

That's the sheath I keep my Wave and bit kit, clip on saw and bit extender in. I bought it way back when and it has held up very nicely

You can get some info on the Leatherman Molle sheaths in this topic.  I started that topic to point out the difference in quality between the old and new Leatherman Molle sheaths, but somewhere in this topic the Molle XL sheath is mentioned also.

If you want more pics compairing both types of Molle sheaths, I could take some pics tomorrow from one of my "regular" Molle sheaths and one of my Molle XL sheaths, just let me know  .

I have the leather sheath for the Surge and it has a pocket for the file/sawblade but if you put half the bit kit in this pocket (10 bits) you cannot close the sheath without tearing it apart. There is no way you can put the complete bit kit with all 20 bits in the pocket.

There was no pictures of the back or attachment area in your thread.   

I believe they are slightly different as well. If I remember correctly the older molle attachment left a part "floppy" and the newer style fixed that. I could be wrong though.

I carry my Surge in that leather sheath, along with one plastic bit holder, all the time ...

But I never carry two of those bit holders, and I never carry the extra saw/file either, most of the time I use the file on my Surge, and the saw (being shorter than the one on my Swisschamp ...  ) stays at home.

If you want a leather sheath that can hold your Surge, the saw/file kit, and two bit holder cards, you're going to get a custom sheath I guess.  Not even the Leatherman Molle XL sheath can carry all of that (just tried it).

I have all of that in ny Molle XL sheath. It works when I put the bit kit in the same space as the Surge. But it is a bit wobbly because of the wheight in combination with the narrow belt strap. It is also somewhat fiddly to get the Surge in an out of the sheath as the bits are in the same pocket.

So, here we go, some pics of my Molle XL, my regular Molle (I believe this is the "older" version, since it came with my BO ST300, a couple of years ago) and my other regular Molle (I believe this is the "newest" version, since it came with my BO Wave and My OHT very recently).  I'm going to call them Molle XL, Molle L "old" and Molle L "new" in this topic.  Some say it's the other way around, that the one that came with my BO ST300 is the new one, and the other that came with the Wave and OHT is the old one, until we know this for sure, I'm going to call the one I got a couple of years ago the "old" one, and the one that I got last month the "new" one.

The Molle XL contains my BO Surge with the plastic file/saw thingy, the Molle L "old" contains my BO ST300, and the Molle L "new" contains my Stainless Surge with the plastic file/saw thingy, clear ?













Pros and cons:

Molle XL:

pros:

- very well made, strong, sturdy feeling.
- four horizontal loops on the back, so more options to weave the vertical loop between them (to make the sheath ride lower on your belt).
- the vertical loop on the back is not folded over before closing the snap button, so it feels less thick.
- awesome velcro patch on sheath and flap (flap being the part of the sheath you pull down to close it, I don't know if it's the right word).
- side pockets for fire steel or flashlight.
- the plastic thingy for the saw/file is nicely stored between the tool and the velcro, instead of between the tool and the back of the sheath.

cons:

- bigger and thicker than the other two.
- a bit more expensive (over here I believe the XL costs 5 Euro extra).
- side pockets don't feel very safe, I always use an S-biner to secure my flashlight or firesteel to my belt, in case it should slide out the side pockets.


Molle L "old":

pros:

- very well made, strong, sturdy feeling.
- awesome velcro patch on sheath and flap (flap being the part of the sheath you pull down to close it, I don't know if it's the right word).
- the edge of the sheath (where you slide in the tool) is nicely finished in the same nylon as the rest of the sheath.
- smaller and thinner than the Molle XL.

cons:

- only three horizontal loops on the back, so less options to weave the vertical loop between them (to make the sheath ride lower on your belt).
- the vertical loop on the back starts quite high, and since there are only three horizontal loops your belt will slide up too high.
- the vertical loop is folded over before you close the snap button, which gives a bit of a lump between your side and the back of the sheath.


Molle L "new":

pros:

- smaller and thinner than the Molle XL.
- the vertical loop on the back starts a bit lower, so your belt can not slide up too high.

cons:

- cheap and flimsy feel.
- thinner nylon, especially on the inside, were you put the tool in, a bit less noticeable on the flap (but still cheaper feel than the other two).
- the velcro patches feel a lot cheaper, and on one side there's even a 5mm loose edge sticking out over the side of the pouch. 
- the vertical loop is folded over before you close the snap button, which gives a bit of a lump between your side and the back of the sheath.
- the edge of the sheath (where you slide in the tool) is made out of this fake leather/plastic, which feels very cheap like it's going to "crack" soon.


There, that's all I have to say about Leatherman Molle sheaths ... 

And as always, this is just my own, humble opinion  .

Well, since we are talking Leatherman sheaths, I have a question....

I have been using the sheath pictured for several years. I really like it, it fits my needs. I have been carrying my original Wave in it.

I just bought a BO new model Wave and would like to get another sheath just like this older one. I don't believe this sheath was for the Wave. Any ideas on what it was for, or help locating another like it?

I prefer the belt clip, so I can use it on belt, pocket or edge of something.

That looks like an OG Supertool sheath and no longer available.  Keep a look out on E-bay as they come up once in a while.

 I do wish that the clip was an option on at least a few of there sheaths nowadays though that would be nice to be able to clip to a pocket or inside of a backpack on a pocket.  That way you could just unzip the pocket a little and it would be easily accessible

This is why I run the molle sheaths.  It was getting real old taking my belt off when I wasn't getting down to "business"

I think I may give the molle sheaths a go they do look nice. Which do you guys prefer new style or old cause they both seem to have there own set of pros and cons? I am gonna go by top-gears old and new

IMO go with the one with Leatherman at the top and the large drain hole.  To me it feels better made and the sides are sloped which gives me easier access to my tool.  The snap is also better quality than the other ( at least on mine ).  The paint or whatever coating that is on the snap came off pretty easy while the other seems like its BO and is looking great.
