WARNING - Fake Victorinox Rescue Tools on eBay!
on: September 05, 2008, 12:49:31 PM
This morning I received a fake Victorinox Rescue Tool from eBay seller iambear_83

,
,

We're all used to seeing knock-off SAKs but this knife is a deliberate attempt to deceive.  As you'd expect there's no quality, in your hand it feels much worse than the pictures make it look (click on the little pics for big ones).  The most worrying aspect is the blade's lock, it looks as if it could fail easily!

I've contacted the seller (who doesn't have any more up for sale at the moment) and asked for a refund.  Obviously I'm a bit annoyed with the seller but I suppose if they've never seen the genuine article before, there's a chance they believed this was the genuine article.

You are warned.

I hope he does the decent thing and refunds you without any hassle mate. Of course, if you payed by PayPal - you're covered anyway, but you'll have to return it to him.

Like Rodion said - what are the things that make you sure it's a fake? Is it just lack of quality ot are there obvious differences from the real thing?

I used to come here a lot.

Wait, how do you know it's not a real one?  ???

The tools are all stiff and I mean stiff!
Scales are poorly finished with molding marks.
Blade lock is completely different and does not lock the opener.
All tools are roughly the same design but not quite. Example: the phillips driver is significantly smaller diameter.
Pouch is totally different and poor quality.

Overall if you've ever held a real one you'd know the fake isn't the real deal the moment you held it. :(

I know Vic's are routinely copied, but that's just plain naughty >:(

You ought to sent the link to Vic so they can tackle the source >:D

As Neil said though - the ebay seller may be completely unaware. If it were me, I'd wait until I'd heard back from iambear_83 before I started reporting people. He could be completely innocent.

Hmm, iambear_83 - that ebay ID sounds really familiar to me  .......

I used to come here a lot.

If that's a fake it's a darn good one, I kept looking at the pics and it sure looks like the real thing. Quality in the hand is another thing all together though. Hmmm, if it is fake someone went through alot of trouble.

I'm a nice guy, (honestly), so I'll give the seller the benefit of the doubt.  If they've never seen a real Vic. then why should they not believe the packaging and the stamps.

Yes, I have a real one to compare it to but believe me, its not necessary to have the two side by side to tell the difference.

Just to make matters worse, I'd bought it as a gift, I have one but its not strictly new and I don't have the packaging for it, so I think they'll be getting a SwissTool RS instead  :-\

This is indeed bad. The auction used the stock photo. If the real photos were used, the sheath would have been a dead giveaway - wrong shape, wrong material, wrong colour (the red is supposed to be brighter, the yellow is supposed to be fluorescent).
I would recommend that Neil (and anybody else who finds hoimself in a similar situation) contact the other eBayers who bought the other 7 pieces (there were 4 auctions with 2 pieces each). 8 negative feedback and Paypal disputes can make a difference. I do not beleive for a second that the seller did not know these are "imitation" items.

This bugs me for a number of reasons.

If it had been someone else not knife savvy that had bought it, not only have Vic lost out on a buy, but if the quality is that bad, the buyer may be put off Vics for good and then no longer buy their products.  They could also share their experiences with others and put them off as well.

I hope you take this the right way Neil, but I am glad you bought that one.  Not because I want you to get scammed, but because you have a lot of Vic knowledge and will spot that it's a fake and then not be put off buying a replacement from Vic themselves or any Vic products in the future.

I hope you get it all sorted ok buddy.
I'm back!!

Guys, there is no way a person without multitool.org charter membership could know this is fake.

Edit: unless they had another one for comparison.  :D

It appears iambear_83 is a wholesaler from Hong Kong. Most likely they are fake, and he knows they are fake.

It just occured to me that often times (as famous as Hong Kong is for knockoffs), sometimes they do sell the genuine products... as seconds or throw aways.

Often times they're stolen by the crateful, I don't even know how they go about that. ???

Though I don't think this is the case. >_>

It isn't the case here, where they are deliberately using a registered trademark.  We use the term "Knockoff" a lot to describe cheaper made butterfly folding tools, but this is truly a "knockoff" in that it is trying to be passed off as the real deal.  The cheapo tools we often see from companies like Sheffield and Carolina, as well as the no name type tools often used for advertising and promotion are not "knockoffs" per se, simply because they aren't trying to be a Leatherman, they are just the same idea.

Neil- in case you see this before you see my comment in SOSAK, please email me all of the info you have on the seller, the blade, how much you paid for it, etc.

The seller has refunded my payment and is asking for the return of the knife.

I want to make sure the right thing happens, so I'm presently seeking legal advice and will not be posting any more about the matter until things are resolved. I'm sure you understand.

I was a small set he sold, just this one time apparently. Everything else is videogames, which also seem to be fake or aquired for less-than-wholesale. :D

A refund is good enough, I think.
Though Victorinox should be notified I don't really think the dealer should be reprimanded.

There was never a law you couldn't escape with a big enough box full of money.

I respect a rifle wielding moustachioed sheriff as much as the next western fan, but every man has a price.
