Can Opener as corkscrew?
on: April 16, 2016, 05:16:06 PM
Okkay, so we all know that the basic tools of a SAK can be used for more than their obvious and intend design. But…I was watching a Youtube video of a guy using the can opener on a cadet to open a corked bottle of wine.

He drove the can opener in at an angle, and then twisted the wine bottle and pulled the can opener up as he twisted. The cork came out neat as you please.

Has anyone actually tried this?

I'm curious of it will work in the real non youtube world.

Not on real corks.

I tried this and failed miserably.
I now only by wine with a screw top and as they stay in my "cellar" for minutes rather than years the screw top is fine.

I'm guessing it will work well on a synthetic polymer cork.  I rarely see those now though.  Most bottles I open have the style that are made from compressed granules of natural cork, sometimes with a slice of cork on each end to make it look like a pure natural cork.  I wonder how well this method works on them.  I'll give it a go next time if I remember.

I think the method is sure to fail on a pure natural cork.

Well then, it's a good thing that I'm a whiskey drinker. Twist off caps on Bourbon.

Most of the spirits I drink come in bottles with a cork. The cork may dry up and break, and then there is no replacement for a proper corkscrew.

Saw the same vid and was impressed. I tryed it with my pioneer on natural cork and unfortunately I didn't work out. Towards the end of plunging the can opener into the cork it stared to push the cork down into the bottle, then when twisting the cork stared to shed. No luck!  Call me a heathen if you want, I just pushed what was left of the poor cork down into the bottle and had at it.
Up the irons

Could a claw opener do a better job?

I saw Tim Leatherman use the blade on a Wave to open a bottle of wine. I would think the main blade on a SAK would work too. I might have to try that some day. Might be a while though, Rum has caps and beer has tabs.

Beer has caps here too, I like beer better in a can. As far as corks, same here, but I can't buy high end hooch on a PBR budget. LOL!

Off course if you know/suspect you need to get some corks out on some excursion you take a SAK with the corkscrew, having to improvise such a iconic feature simply won't do, or at least you'll have to practice, improvising a corkscrew and slicing your hand open or taking ages won't be remembered as a impressive party trick.

If you are known as the fix-it guy among your friends and family, you'll feel very embarrassed if they turn to you for a corkscrew and you don't have one on you.

I was at a friend's daughter's birthday party, and they wanted to open a bottle of wine, and of course the opener was nowhere to be found, so I was very happy to have had my Huntsman with me.
Do yourself a favor. If you're going to a party, go with a sak that has a corkscrew. Keep your big leatherman if you must, but throw a spartan in your pocket. It might save the day and spare you an embarrassing moment.
