Garage sale finds (NON Knife/MT/SAK)
on: August 15, 2015, 09:52:00 PM
I will go to a garage sale every once and a while and decided to go on a little drive today and see what happened. I hit a few sales and came across one out in the country. Old couple. A lot of really nice old clocks and things. I noticed these book ends and what appears to be a Jade pendant. Bought them both and was on my way. I love both pieces, but I am wondering if anyone knows much about Jade and how to tell if it is real.

Anyways this thread is for those non knife, MT, SAK things you pick up at the garage sales.  :tu:

Here are the horse book ends.

The Jade (maybe) pendant.

Cool bookends and pendant, don't know if they are jade or not.

Most of the garage sales around here are crap, baby stuff kids clothes ect. so I haven't bothered in years, however I did stop at one earlier this summer because I saw a big rolling tool box. I scored a power strip, some rolls of tape, a couple of chisel, a set of nut drivers and a brand new set of Nicholson metal and wood files all for $5

I know the book ends are not Jade.

You never know what you might find when you go to a garage sale.

I am drawn for some reason to Coleman camp stoves (and lanterns).  I've bought several at sales for as low as $2.00 up to $20.00.  Never paid more than that.  Most people rarely use them and store them in the original boxes, so most of the stoves I've bought have been in as good as new condition.  I bought one stove at an estate sale for $10.00 and then the guy threw in half a dozen bottles of propane.  It's as if I paid retail for 4 bottles of propane and then got 2 more plus an $80 stove for free.  He said his parents had only used it for a couple of days during a power failure and I believed him.  It didn't have a mark on it.  I decided to standardize on propane stoves and lanterns a couple of years ago, so I sold off all of my liquid fuel stuff and made a nice profit.

Yes, it is. In german we'd say "Fadenzähler" (Thread-counter). It belonged (with the Wenger I got) to an old man who recently passed away. The woman who sold it to me told me, he liked to use it in secrecy for reading, because he was eager that nobody got aware that his eyesight was not the best anymore. This is also why he didn't get glasses.

Things like this make such finds much more interesting and in most cases I can relte to those stories, as my grandfather could have been the one in this situation. :D

That is awesome Maryanne!  I'd spend easily 20x that on a Spyderco Q and consider myself lucky!  You did great there!

I really like that thread-counter.  :)  My best finds were a pair of Wolverine working/hiking boots for $10 that were almost brand new, and my current change bowl, which is pewter, I think, for a whopping $0.50. :)
