Tableaus like these were pretty common in the 19th and beginning 20th century. Kind of showed, what a store or travelling salesman could sell to you (without having to pull out each and every item over and over again. There was no or little self-service back then, you basically went to the counter and told the shopkeeper what you needed.
Especially travelling sellers had wonderful chests and drawers, often arranged in wonderful portable cabinets... try google on this, you most probably will want one right away.
