*Sigh* Okay, OKAY! STOP!.
You have convinced me, I need a SwissChamp!

What are your opinions about the magnifier? I personally like the old type better (gray plastic) opposed to the newer one piece ones.

Agree, but the newest magnifier (2012 onwards) is two piece - clear plastic frame with a glass lens - and it's better than the other two.  Bigger field of view than the grey one, higher magnification than the previous one-piece design.

I really like the white scales!  One of my Swisschamps is the original model that replaced the Champion.  I had intended to see if I could sand/polish the existing scales but they turned out to not be original.  My plan is to equip this Swisschamp with white scales that I got from Folderbeholder (thanks FB!).

Looking at your SC is great motivation to get on the stick!

+1.  I have both the old gray frame and the newest version and I like the latest versions field of view better.

The grey frame glass magnifiers have been my clear preference and a strong consideration in my multiple Explorer purchases.  I thought that my first two Explorer purchases with clear magnifiers were plastic and I quickly put them back in their boxes.  Amazon pictured the grey-frame magnifier but the clear magnifiers show up.  Since I purchased them for Christmas, they were stored for months and past the return date.  When I learned about the newest glass magnifier with clear plastic frame, I had a closer look at the clear framed magnifiers and could see that there were glass with a clear frame. This helped me feel much better about the Amazon purchase.  Encouraged by the performance of the clear magnifiers, I picked up an Explorer with a clear magnifier but it turned out to be plastic.  I wish I knew how to tell the difference between the plastic and clear framed glass magnifiers from photos.  Since I don't, I lean heavily toward the grey-framed magnifier for my purchases.  My last two Swisschamp purchases have clear magnifiers and I need to have a closer look to see if they are the clear framed glass magnifiers.

Okay, this is interesting. Especially what NorCalJim said, it's hard to tell the difference.
As far as I know now, there are three versions:
- Grey, glass lens, 8x magnification (1973-2004)
- Transparent, plastic (one piece?), 5x magnification (2004-2012)
- Transparent, glass lens, 6x magnification (2012-now)

As it turns out, I was just talking to my dad about getting a SwissChamp and he gave me his!  :tu:
This does make things a little difficult though, I was planning to get a second hand SwissChamp and replace the scales with green plus scales (if available).
He has changed the red scales for a red and a black one. So I don't really want to change them as it took him years to get a SwissChamp and it really is his SwissChamp.
