Check with Tony,  he has the market cornered on rusty English axe heads....  Soak it in vinegar and take a brass wire brush to it.

Does the number refer to a weight or size? Looks not much bigger than a hatchet.

Could be either ;) Really depends on what the manufacturer wanted it to be really :tu: In your case the way it looks to me it is the weight of it in pounds perhaps

I have seen them refer to the weight or if they make/made several different models then it could be that model/size number. I have seen this in both axes and sledges :tu:

It's soaking in vinegar now and after a couple of days it has a date with an abrasive disc on the angle grinder.

I guess you already know to use lots of water to keep the steel cool
And it would be safer to hang it before giving it a sharp edge (I always forget that part  :-[ )

By abrasive disc I mean it's like a pot scrub, not a grinding or cutting disc... however I may need to use something heavy duty to tidy up the shape of the cutting edge.

Yeah going by my steps I had him sharpen it first before putting the handle as well ::) :D

Always better to put handle first then sharpen ;)

An update of sorts.... (no internet for weeks...):

I soaked the axe head in white vinegar. I only filled it just above the the equator and turned it over daily:

The problem is this meant the side that was out of the water would start rusting up again:

The grinder wheel got a bit hot and bits of hot plastic were flying at me and sticking to my clothes... I think it's not meant for cleaning metal, just removing paint. (The metal did not heat up at all)

After removing the rust I coated it in linseed oil. It is quite pitted. This is where it is at now:

It looks larger than my hatchet so I'm guessing I should go for a two-handed handle. These are about $40 here so maybe I will make one...

Sometimes, when brooding over things, I gain hope in the thought that it is the invention of film, of videos, and of the possibility of sharing them, that will prevent mankind from the complete loss of culture.
Big thank you for that video!

They also show how to hang an axe in the related video "Handtools for Trail Work" (Part 2). There's also a Leatherman being used on a saw in Part 1.

What does the inscription say?

"Made in England"
"???"
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.
