It’s looking good Mate and the pitting is not going to matter a great deal, after all it’s an axe not a fine wood chisel  :tu:
Also as you keep using and sharpening it, it will get better with time

And you can guarantee if you get an axe sharpened and polished to a perfect edge you will find a knot or stone the very first time you take it out  :ahhh

Years ago I bought a new light duty camping axe. The first day out camping at a National Park a neighbour asks to borrow my axe.  I said sure thing, expecting them to use it to split wood or prepare kindling.

They returned it all beat up with deep scratches. The first cut is the deepest.

It was used to drive steel tent stakes into their rocky campsite. By the looks of the axe they must have been crushing rocks with it.

We didn't even set up tent stakes as our site was a boulder field. It still hurts me.

Like the first scratch on a new car.

... oh dear, I'm sorry to hear that...

After several similar stunts I've decided to go with this sentence:

"I'm sorry, but due to religious reasons I can't lend you my knife/axe/tool , but I'll gladly help you with the chore"

Always a good laugh and worked quite well until now.

I still haven't sorted a handle for it yet....

I found this hatchet head at the side of the road during my run yesterday. The road is on the way to the dump so there is always rubbish around that hasn't been securely fastened down on trailers and utes (pickups). Usually things like construction waste (packaging from products), household things like old furnishings and often areas with lots of takeaway trash where people have pulled over to eat and thrown it out the window...

I think it might be a modern (and probably cheap) head due to the plastic at the top of the handle. I believe the markings say "1½".
I already have a hatchet so perhaps this could become a little camping axe....

The old hatchet I used to split kindling is a Chinese thing I picked up at a dollar store 20 or so years ago. The handle was loose so I knocked it off the handle, there were no wedges or anything holding the head on the handle other than the plastic that had been poured into the eye with a bit of a notch across the handle. It now has a metal wedge

What a great find
I believe they used started to use 'permabond' in the 50's
Looks like it hasn't been abused. just a spot of rust so it should clean up nicely  :tu:

What you see here is not actually the rusty axe head but rather the rust that has been liberated off it and migrated to the surface of the vinegar... in the exact shape of the axe head below.

Looking better... I wonder if all the pitting is from the rust alone or whether some of it is from the vinegar eating at the metal (I soaked it for 3 or 4 days).

So it had a circular wedge in there. Any other markings?

 :tu:

With the 'perma bond' and the round wedge I'm guessing it's a Swedish Axe

Looks to have a line where the hardened steel edge goes to. Bloody good freebie if it's Swedish!

I like the sound of Swedish. :dd:
No other markings are visible though.

That is an excellent freebie if it is Swedish. Only better deal would be if you had gotten some Swedish meatball to go along with it
