Made me an axe handle
on: May 03, 2016, 06:50:14 PM
I just finished this axe handle/axe.
It has been an on and off project over the past three years. You'd think Id manage to take som pics of the progress, but somehow I failed spectacularly at that.
Three years ago I cut down a small tree with my fiskars x5,  ( not the best tool for felling a tree... :D) and cut out two pieces for making axe handles. I then let them dry in my garage for a couple of years until I remembered that they where there :) I finally got around to finish the first one.
No powertools was used in the process. Just a saw, axe, knife, file, sandpaper and a lot of elbow grease.
The axe head was handmade by a blacksmith after the pattern of a arecheological find of a Viking age axe.
Im quite happy with the result, exept that I had to use some epoxy to fill in the gaps between the wedge and the handle to make sure the head would not become loose during use.

I have used some linseed oil on it.
I think they used whatever they had available. (Not many wood handles has been found) So, tar, animal fat, whale oil, linseed oil and beeswax where probably used.

Since I totally screwed up taking photos of the making of this one, I figured   I should post pics of making the 2nd one as I progress. I wont work on it every day, but Ill try to post pics everytime I do.

Here is the piece of wood next to the 1st one wich came from a similar piece of wood.

And this is how far I got today.

Two sides roughly straitened.
The axe Im using is a Wetterlings carpenters axe, wich is fantastastic for this kind of work.

Removed some more wood today. It might be hard to see, but a fair amount was removed.

Having just looked in the knife forum I think I might have worked out that answer for myself.  What are your thoughts?

First thought is that it eats wood like crazy! It removes it in long strips and big chunks.
I havent quite desided what I think about the grip yet. So far it is not super comfortable in the hand, but its not very uncomfortable either.
