Not that exact model, but I did try one of these and quite liked the shape.  I found I got more use out of one of these though.  I think magentus has one of these on his U-boat somewhere too.  Hope this helps. :salute:

I don’t think anyone here has a plastic shield like that.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

As it seems to be a polycarbonate plastic it should be quite tough and impact resistant. (Find a similar thickness piece of Lexan (polycarbonate) somewhere and bring your favorite hammer, sledge, baseball bat and throw some rocks at it. It is a tough material, especially with the slight give someone holding it will provide).

Edit: If I'm not mistaken protective glasses are often made of polycarbonate plastic, and they are not anywhere near 6mm thick,

You have to appreciate and care for a good troll if you find one. It is important to have pets and hobbies they say.

That said, who among us can't use a good polycarbonate riot shield now and then? It seemed great for swash buckling.

Not being a riot policeman, I generally find it in my best interest to avoid compromised areas. Just don't be where there is a riot and you won't need a riot shield. A helmet of some sort even a bicycle helmet will better protect you from flying objects such as rocks and batteries anyway, and you can more easily and less obtrusively carry a bicycle helmet with you than a shield.

If you just have to be in a riot zone don't forget a good gas mask.  I don't recommend military surplus for this because the filters that come with them are suspect.  That's why they are sold for collecting purposes only. You don't know if they are out of date or if they have been stored properly or even if they will work for the specific riot control gas you are likely to face.  Better to get a new, commercial grade, gas mask such as used around paints, solvents, and organic pesticides, and have a couple of different filters with you just in case.

I've seen some demonstrators bring their own riot shields to counter the Police. Maybe that is a use?

As a general note it is important to bring some like minded angry friends if you are going to riot. A single guy with a shield breaking up cobble stones and throwing them around just doesn't count as a riot.

People collect all kinds of stuff. Stamps, tools, money - why should the OPs tactical gear be any different?

That was one thing I always wondered about Mythbusters - why they didn't dig into all the material within the martial arts world. Breaking stuff trickery, plenty of useless or even dangerous advice, and plenty of claims without foundation. Should have been a treasure chest right there.

I'd be worried if my neighbour is wanting to buy riot shields after looking up methods of kicking in my door

A riot shield would be nice to have against this guy  :D

See, he had a riot shield and it looked very useful.

Wonder if they can be used for serving cakes too?

Simple things to test first... choose the size you want. Buckle that much weight to your arm. Hold your arm up in a defensive posture... keep that up for a couple of minutes.

Shields are used when fighting in formation, for individuals they are pretty much useless (they have become mostly useless during the middle ages when halberds started to tear shield formations apart like paper. Riot shields are an exception, but they are mostly used to stop low power projectiles like stones).
Shield is one of those things where heavy is good as the mass of the shield is what stops the impact (else it simply goes on your arm or wrist in case of bucklers). If you want something defensive shield-like, I would recommend a tonfa (training is of course key). But I would even more recommend to work on your running/endurance, that will probably be a far better strategy.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Some idiots but some are even impressive in failure... and you know you have to train (and fail) before you succeed.

Image search indicates that different countries are doing all kinds of weird and wonderful stuff with riot shields, but my experience has always been of the armadillo interlocking type - ie, you make a wall with all your buddies and simply walk forward (or backward, depending on how you feel about the situation) and use a baton on trouble makers who get too close.

A buckler style disc seems terrible to me, but maybe I just don't know the necessary techniques.....

The style was originally used for chaotic close quarter fighting in confined spaces so I assume it makes sense it that setting. That is almost the opposite of interlocking lines with clear fronts, so I would expect the evolved shield designs to differ too.

Anyone heard anything about how the OPs neightboor surveillance/ door kicking turned out? I can't see how any action could end well at all - shield or not.. And if the neighboor just happen to be a girl I could see all kinds of additional issues too.
