EDC conundrum
on: May 10, 2016, 11:27:32 AM
Hi

Since loosing my CS Finn Wolf of the farm I slipped the Skeletool in my pocket for a few days, but that didn't last long.....weight.

I decided the Finn Wolf was my last purchase, because let's face it, it's an unhealthy obsession, and I can't afford a knife-making hobby and buying knives.

There was a lot to like about the Finn Wolf, especially after the mods I did, but if I'm honest I always knew it was there.....

Don't know if I'm doing something wrong, but I've never managed to carry a knife clipped to my pocket, they just don't seem to move with me and the clothes like I want them to - without need for adjustment.

I assume that's part of the reason why the FW climbed out of my pocket, it was not clipped, and due to it's size and my movements on the day it wormed out.

I've since put my two smallest Enlans back in rotation, 2nd day and I have to admit it's better knowing they're there but not feeling the knife.

I didn't weigh them, but I'm sure the Finn Wolf might be lighter than the baby Enlans, but I've realised size is also a very important factor for me, and the FW was a bit too large....

Would definitely like to get back to a  bare-bones knife in my pocket, been browsing the Cold Steel site and obviously there are several candidates.....but I keep coming round to one of the plastic handled Spydercos....

Everyone has their own parameters for EDC comfort.

I have friends who carry big and heavy knives as their clothing and work day allows it.  Full sized frame locks like the ZT 0560 , ZT0350 etc. some carry PM2's and Griptillians.
I have carried all types and mix it up with a varied and wide collection; I have 2-3 favourites that I fall back to when I'm not "thinking" or "playing"

I prefer to feel that I have a knife in my pocket than to not, Al Mar Eagle HD, Sage 1 and RAT Model II are in my pocket more than anything else.

Sorry to hear about the FW. :(

If you're thinking about Spyderco but want to keep the cost down don't forget about the Byrd series from them.

The Delica is awesome, and not too expensive (in the US at least). I find it to be very comfortable. The Native 5 is another decently-priced option which is similar in size and weight. The Manix 2 "Lightweight" (with the FRCP handle) is extremely light for its size, but it's also fairly wide because of the blade/handle shape — I don't carry it as much just because it's harder to reach into your pocket to grab things (coins, keys, etc) with the knife in the way.

I'd also suggest checking out the Kabar Dozier Folding Hunter which is a good size, light weight, and cheap. You could even look at the Buck BuckLite MAX.

I've some other options as well, but they start to get heavier. Ontario RAT-2 and Kershaw Skyline are probably the smallest and lightest among the ones I have.

Hope this helps! :tu:

I don't have any Byrd knives, but I believe that they tend to be heavier than the Dragonfly / Delica / Endura because they have full size liners. The Raven 2 (which has tempted me for several months) is 120 g, which is almost as much as the Skeletool.
May it be as the Pattern has chosen.

GG get some 50/50 Veld Fokus two tone shirts and carry a Buck 110 on your belt. Or a cheaper Ecolite version.

I don't want a clip showing in the office, just in case.......but I'm a bit surprised weight and size bothers as much.
That said, I can never see myself making peace with adjusting a knife in my pocket every time I get in a car or sitting down.

I don't think they're available locally with the steel upgrade yet, but I do seem to remember FRN-handled Byrds.....? That could be a good option, like the ergos better than on Tenacious&Co.

I'm working at the wrong end of the exchange rate, so some of what you mention are out of my price range.

I was looking at the Enduras and Delicas last night, compared to a few others and came round to an old favourite, the Atlantic Salt.
I might be able to get a good deal on one, and I love the knife because of how it feels in my hand and despite the looks...

Despite the possible discount still expensive.....

I just bought a drill press that's only halfway paid, crazy unexpected expenses on my car........the Atlantic is more than twice the price of the Finn Wolf.

I had something like the Meadowlark II in mind; FRN scales, full flat ground blade.  I've not tried that one myself mind-you, but I'm a big fan of my Byrd Tern.

The FRN Cara Cara 2 is about the same price as a Finn Wolf, slightly heavier, and comparing 8cr13 to AUS8A.......

I've messaged a rep I know about the upgraded Byrds, not made up my mind on a model, but it's definitely the right recipe  :tu:

Only the Byrd Raven and Crow.

Find someone coming from the USA; a Cara Cara FRN is $20 = N$300

I don't know that rust is an issue in WHK, maybe Swakop.
The Cara Cara Serrated Rescue is $22

I appreciate H1 at the coast but its really soft and edge holding is worse than 8Cr13; the structure of the serrations protects the H1 and the grinding hardens them a little. So Atlantic is a great option but a Cara Cara comes in a 1/4 price.

I hear what your saying, 8cr13 has treated me well enough, maybe just some in-closet steel snobbery talking  :D

I almost find the Atlantic ugly, but it feels SO good in my hand........it's been a long battle trying to resist.

Anyway, I'm bankrupt, at least 1.5 months before I can even consider buying anything

I wont tell you what I paid for my Atlantic Salt from a friend. This was as recent as last month, less than a Finn Wolf.
Older fully pinned one.

Does feel very ergonomic.

I suspect it might be a bit on the large side again considering it'll be floating mostly horizontally in my pocket.

There's new stock arriving soon, my brain is telling me I should be looking at Enduras and Delicas.....
