Much as I love the show I'm not surprised it's coming to an end, there really can't be many more unexplained stories and myths to investigate.  He's an engaging enough presenter that I suspect he'll go on to do something else though.

Any other shows with characters who use Leathermans regularly?

I doubt there is, at least to the extent of River Monsters. Otherwise it would have come up, although River Monsters had all these episodes and only a handful have.

"Survivorman" Les Stroud used a LM quite often I'd say.

Why was he using a LM? Had his range of multi-tools not been released yet?

Pretty much, yeah.  :D  I'm thinking right back to the first couple of series where, IIRC, he used a mix of LMs and Vics depending on the episode and scenario he was doing.

He has used several and it seems he has used a Wave (newer Wave) more than most others but in the very first episode (more a precursor to Survivorman) he used a SAK :tu:

1x02 - Killer Catfish

This is in the extended version of the episode, which is 87 minutes long, instead of the edited version which is 43 minutes long. It is in the extended version that the giant softshell turtle is shown.

OG Wave, next to the green crimpers. They all got out of its way, and let it go back in the water.

Great spots RP.  I suspect I'd not realised just how often he's seen with one is because he just happens to use one, rather than making it a "thing" and drawing attention to it.  Does that make sense?

Thanks!  :)
Many of the pics I've posted are very easy to miss, because the MT is shown for a second or two, usually in movement so it's blurry, not well lit, and not from the best angle. It is true, however, that there are so many episodes with a well shown LM, it is weird how we all kept missing them.

The only mention he has made to a LM is where in "5x01 - Face Ripper" he caught himself with the hook and said something like "he holds the fish while I get to work with some pliers" and used the ALX to pull the hook out of his finger.

So, when is he going to "produce" his own multitool/knife/gear line ?

So, when is he going to "produce" his own multitool/knife/gear line ?

I was thinking about that the other day.
If he indeed designed a multi-tool, either exclusively or having a major part in its creation (unlike Les), what would it center around? Not survival, surely. None of the models he has used so far had much to do with survival, other than they would be rather nice to have. It would not center around fishing either, given that he has not been shown to use a fishing multi-tool.

Up until now, there have been five LM models: Charge TTi and ALX, old and new Wave, and a single instance of the Blast/Fuse. It is obvious that the Wave/Charge form factor works for him. What has he used in the show?

PE blade: One handed, 154cm steel. Lots of use, so it makes sense.
Pliers: He goes for the crimper heads. Not one-handed, but I've seen him take it out of the sheath, and indeed tuck it away, with only one hand, while holding a fish in the other. He can also put it in the sheath in the open position, when in the middle of fishing knowing he'll use it, like with piranha for example.
Flatheads for the reels. No rush for these, so no need for one-handed deployment, or many sizes for that matter.
SE Blade: I've only seen it used when he cut a rope tied to a croc. Not an everyday occurrence I'd say. OHO again, just in case.
Lanyard ring: He has used them to screw reels and pry piranha lips to expose the teeth. I've never seen a lanyard on these, come to think of it.
Another fairly interesting point is that he uses a sheath, which eliminates the need for a pocket clip.
He also has dedicated braid scissors, and heavy duty crimpers, and fixed pliers.

Taking these points into account, why would he design a multi-tool? The Wave/Charge setup works well. And being such a dedicated Leatherman user, I doubt he'd put his name on a cheap multi-tool, and then be forced to use that one for the show, instead of a trusty Leatherman.

7x08 - Killer Treasures

This is the only time I've seen him actually show a Leatherman.

Season 9 is out!
All the season's episodes' titles have been added to the River Monster wikipedia page, if you want to take a look. I'd post it here with spoiler tags, but it'll be too much of a temptation, if anyone wanted not to see them.

Sadly the last season, but exciting nonetheless. Maybe incidents will arise and give enough reason to do a tenth one. Who knows.

Which Leatherman will be in this season? Place your bets.  :D
I'm guessing the ALX, seeing how much more he has carried it compared to all others. How awesome would it be if it was a Signal though. Or the OHT.  :P

I hope so too. Maybe another fishing show, but a bit toned down. Maybe just fishing tips, or maybe narrating for something related. He has a great narrator's voice.

This is a new season, so I'm thinking of adding spoiler quotes to the pics.

The title of the thread seems odd now. There have been five models so far, and the most common is the ALX, then the TTi.

Would "Leatherman MTs in River Monsters" be more appropriate?
Or just "Leatherman Charge in River Monsters", since the two Charge models are featured in more episodes?

uhm, ok. I've got some bad news. I doesn't seem like we'll be seeing any more LM tools in this season. The first clue was given in Season 7 I think, which barely featured any models, in contrast to Season 6, which had the ALX in every episode.

I'm halfway through the episode, and I've spotted blurred brand names.

Along with dedicated tools for the reel, where we've seen a LM used instead.

So, yeah. Too bad.
Still, there were some nice moments. This little guy flew in the boat, and it's the first that's been shown on the show.

Still quite bummed out, though. I thought LM would not mind free advertizing. If, on the other hand, this was the issue, and LM was asked to pay for their tools to be features and properly shown on the show, and refused, then it kind of makes more sense, but why would LM not pay? It's a very popular show, and LM would certainly benefit from them showing a Charge for a few seconds more every time, to let viewers take a better look of the tool, instead of me going frame-by-frame to identify a model.

oh right, I forgot there was also a Gerber Suspension, as well as a generic MT in 6x03.
Let me think about it.

"Leatherman Multi-tools used in River Monsters (Spoilers)"

I think this covers all bases. There are mainly LM tools in the show, and that's what people search for. If they do not know, they'll look up just multi-tools, and not just "MT".
"Charge TTi" can be omitted from the title, since it is just one of five LM tools, and not the most used. The Gerber and cheapo are just bonuses.

And I'd rather have "spoilers" in the title, instead of forcing everyone to click "show" in every post. Plus, it's River Monsters. It's not like there's a plot to be spoiled.
