My Surge Mods
on:
April 03, 2016, 12:45:55 AM
Hi all,
I got myself a Leatherman Surge a few months ago, and I am liking it a lot. I have made some modifications to it and it's accessorizes. Hope you like them, and find them useful (especially the pocket clip play fix).
Best Regards,

Good video Kargi, the clip mod is very clever! I will have to try this, my Surge has the same problem.

Sinan, nice work on the Surge. Great mods! I did the same mod for my pocket clip only I used a piece of aluminum and some glue. I think you magnet trick is very clever. Thanks for sharing man.

Thank you chorono, thank you ducttapetech
I haven't had the time test the endurance of clip yet, I may this weekend. I have also found a close size magnet online. If it works well without sanding, it will great for all

Thank you Mr. Biriyani
I have been waiting for magnets that I can suggest anyone that wants to do this clip fix. The ideal magnet should
be 10x3x1.6mm, but I couldn't find one online. The closest/cheapest one (
http://www.dx.com/p/n35-rectangle-shaped-f10-x-3-x-3mm-ndfeb-magnets-silver-10-pcs-383708#.V0mBUeST5b0
), a 10x3x3mm. So I sanded down one side with a sanding disk attached to a Dremel at lowest RPM. I suggest sticking the magnet to big piece of metal (or another magnet) to dissipate the heat.
I have been testing my Surge for the last week with clip, it never got loose. But if you want to de/re-attach the clip while inserting the clip, you should angle the tip of clip away from the tool, so the extrusion at the bottom, doesn't slide magnet downwards. If it slides magnet downwards, no problem also, you can use the tip of clip to push the magnet upwards again. Once the clip is seated, there is no chance magnet to slide.

2) Magnet before/after
3) Magnet in place
4) In case I lost the tool

Nice mod. I did the same with my surge but with a small piece of stainless steel that I glued into place. It works a treat.
Incidentally, the steel in the clip is the exact thickness needed (or was for mine). I used a piece of a broken one to do the mod.

Looks good. I like how you cut down the sides of the hex bit holder.
