Police needs smaller Skeletool
Reply #60 on: April 11, 2018, 12:14:54 PM
I would suggest, that Leatherman develops two smaller versions of the Skeletool RX, that have only 70 percent and 50 percent of the weight and size of the current Skeletool RX. Those two smaller Skeletool RX-versions can be useful for police-officers.

The lower weight is helpful to run fast in pursuit, and because police-equipment is getting heavy, with the body-cam, spare pistol-magazines, heavy bullet-proof vest, metal baton, taser, pepper-spray, spare batteries, smartphone, etc.

The bit-driver should fit the regular flat Leatherman double sided screw-bits.

These new smaller 'Skeletools' should have replacable wire-cutters, for the police, to cut fences in pursuit, wich can get the wire-cutter dented easily.

These smaller multitools can best be made of unpainted metal, so paint cannot be scratched off in rough use. And the multi-tool still will be visible to be used in low-light. No painting may save production-costs. And orange does not 'match' with the color of police-uniforms, if someone would carry it without a pouch.

The multitool can be attached to the vest or belt with a lanyard, so it cannot get lost. So a lanyard-hole is important.

The carbine-hook/bottle-opener adds extra weight and cost, without urgency for police-officers. They can carry an separate larger multitool with bottle-opener in the patrol-car. Therefore the bottle opener can be omitted form the new small Skeletool, even if that shortens the handle.

I am not shure, if the popular pouch carry is better than belt-clip carry for police-officers. Both options add a little extra weight to the multi-tool. Pouch carry could help prevent, that the multitool is grabbed by an offender, to be used as a weapon against the officer, during a fight, or to steal it. So maybe the belt-clip could also be omitted, to save some weight and cost.

The Skeletool RX could also be modified for police-work after production, to reduce the weight. This can be done by sawing off some parts: the bottle-opener, part of the pliers, and half of the knife-blade, leaving room to carry an extra screw-bit, if one wants to. And the belt-clip can be removed.

These modifications can also be done by Leatherman themselves before sale, as a low-cost market-experiment, to see if this special police-version is in demand by police-agencies and security-personel. And that new light-weight model could also be popular with non-police consumers, for everyday carry. It would make sense, to market this version explicitely as "Police Version".

Manufacturers can cooperate with police

It would make sense, if multi-tool-manufacturers would design specific police-multi-tools, in close cooperation with police-experts from different countries. They could discuss that without travel-costs via email, video-chat, etc.

Or multi-tool-manufacturers and police-organisations could set up specific international internet-forums, where they invite police-experts, to discuss the needs and wishes of LEOs, regarding multi-tools.

Total weight of permanently carried police gear is about 18 lbs, including boots and safety-vest. That weight can be even higher, with a heavy-duty ballistic vest, duty-belt-suspenders, rifle, extra mags, search-light, drinking-water, riot-gear or winter-clothing. Therefore multi-tool weight can be an issue for certain officers, esp. in foot-pursuit.

They most likely don’t, at least not on a regular basis.

If they did, they would have better QC. :D
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!
