Gotcha. Cheers Bob.

Well if I'm going to have to start grinding backsprings anyway, I might as well do it from a Solo and save a few quid

I was thinking about having the opener layer on my PX removed, and Mags kindly offered to do it for me. But I'm getting cold feet now. Any advice? Should I leave it as is? The snap on the scissors is quite strong, stronger than on my Climber and Compact, but not by very much.

Why are you thinking of ditching that layer?

To slim down the knife. And I don't need the tools.

I wouldn't. Doing that would make it a SAK that you wouldn't ever carry on it's own. Even the Compact has a combo tool. It would be a SAK that you would need to pair with something else, always.

Sure you'd have scissors, knife, and awl. Lots of function there. But the opener layer is just too useful not to have with you. If the knife blade is the heart of a SAK, the opener layer is the legs it stands on.

I'm not carrying a SAK on its own, ever, so that's not a problem for me.  :)

Why not just carry a Compact?

Or a pair of small scissors?

I'm not sure what the effort of removing a layer of tools would do for you when you already have other knives and tools with you. What are you looking for in terms of functionality that you couldn't accomplish better with a dedicated tool or two...?   :-\  :pok:

You carry four alox knives, plus other knives and tools.  :D I think there's only Peacent who comes close to the amount of duplication (both gardeners, I notice  :D), and you are looking at losing one layer of one knife.  :pok: I don't think I have any advice that will help   :P   You're just going to have to do whatever feels right for you, buddy  :salute:

Just because  :D.

Nothing wrong with a Compact, of course. Or a Climber. I have both and I like them. But a PX without the opener layers would have all of the tools I deem neccesary in an urban environment, it would be alox, and it would be both lighter and slimmer than a Compact. If it's not your cup of tea then so be it. For me, a large set of tools on my SAK is not very important. I EDC a Carver SW, pruning shears and a folding woodsaw; together with scissors I've got my needs covered. Everything else is just bells and whistles. A pair of small scissors would suffice, but I prefer an alox SAK.

I meant advice on the technical part, like should I (Mags) expect any problems modding it?

If it's a technical question how the knife will work, from the clues I've gleaned today, I'd say the pin will be better supported (as the knife will be thinner and the pin supported directly on the scale), which might make it a bit of a bear trap/nail breaker.

But I'm just guessing from other people's observations  :salute:

I was thinking of having pliers added to my PX. But it would be so much cheaper to go with a Super Tinker Deluxe... What are your thoughts?

...as long as you are carrying a few other SAKs, right?

If the idea excites you..... Why not?

But it wouldn't work for me since I never carry more than two SAK's at a time.
