I agree with the Mora but I disagree with the "hard use" part. They're really not constructed for it, if you've ever taken the birch handle ones apart they aren't that secure. And the plastic ones...

They're plastic.

But yes, everyone should keep a Mora for light tasks. :D
They are pretty tough, Mors Kochanski used to hammer one into a tree then stand on it! :o

Also, I can buy a couple of Moras and still have enough left over for a proper prybar, hatchet, saw, machete and shovel. Guess my Mora would last a really long time then.

Yes... but this is a topic about hard use knifes. :D

I've only broken one myself, but I know a lot of people who've broken them while batoning and other tasks. The handle/blade joining is a major fault. But that may just be attributed to the rat tail or whatever else they use tang... which is generally not good for a heavy use knife. =P

Well it's pretty unavoidable on the plastic handled one's, but the earlier wooden handled Errikson's are pretty bloody solid :)

Mora's are really nice blades. I have several and really like all that they can do, but I wouldn't consider them a hard use
knife, I consider them a versatile, lite-edc type blade for multiple "soft" jobs. One of my favorite beaters.

But there too rich for my blood these day's :(
All of you people are too expensive. I've never spent more than $25 on an axe/knife. And only $40 on ONE multitool. :(

EDIT: Don't worry about it. It's not like I use these things professionally anyway~
I like Scrapyard because they are Busse blades (same family) but less expensive!
I couple of years ago (before I studied and read up) I wouldn't have spent more than
100.00 on any blade.

but if you want the best, something that will last your life time and beyond,
if you want a blade you can trust your life on, and a lifetime warranty,
you'll have to spend a few bucks, but it doesn't have to break the bank, and I think for a
quality knife under 200 that's not breaking the bank (unless your a teen :P).

[ignorant hat] how would my F1 compare to all these tough knives? Just so i have a sort of base line to judge how tough these knives you are talking about are :) [/ignorant hat]

I like to have several insurances, and the rest of the money to barter for goods when robbing people at knife point isn't an ethical option. :D

An F1 one is a VERY tough knife :), but it's not as strong as some of the knives discussed here.

But then your's is a lot more usable, and rust resistant that all the knives mentioned so far :)

Now I can't say I have put it to hard use, but I think the Cold Steel Trailmaster would be a good contender.

you know if I just had my F1 I'd be a pretty happy camper, it can do so much and take it.
for a smaller (under 6 inches) type blade, I think it's one of the best out there!

and....I'd trust it way more than any CS! :pok: :P

I don't know why people knock on CS, you get what you pay for. Just don't pay their MSRP.

And you'd best be paying for a hunk of 1055 carbon steel or VG-10. :D

I know they did some 420 junk earlier but... *shrugs*

A little off topic, but if you ever get the chance, read the book and/or watch the video about Richard Proenneke. Very impressive.

because they seem to be so hit and miss, especially lately. I do think you can get a good one, at a nice deal
but personally I could never trust them in a "for real" situation.

I have a Cold Steel SRK in Carbon V (I guess now it's made out of AUS 8) and it's been pretty durable.

That's about when I got mine...there was alot of talk about them around that time.  I have used it to do some fairly rough brush cleaning and the only problem I have had is a little rust when I don't clean it as well as I should.
