A SAKrilege in progress.

What the heck is that guy doing?
I'm sure that more than one other user would ponder these thoughts when looking at the following pictures, but let me explain...
It all started when I won that wonderful, more than perfect syph-climber with perfect titanium-scales, perfect brass-liners and a snap that'd let original SAKs blush...
THAT'S ONE PERFECT KNIFE! ... but an imperfect guy to carry it ;-)
I have a habit of customizing almost everything, and most often I insert some kind of story into the item I mod. Since Syph's climber is going to be my all-time travelling-knife, for example heading to Japan in three months, I wanted to give it some special and personal touch (hopefully) without ruining it. And so I thought up a very small mod...
When my brother built his new home at the site of my father's, grandfather's, great-grandfather's and great-great-grandfather's farm, an ancient pear tree had to go, a pear tree that had been standing there for more than 100 years. A special tree which I dearly miss.
I had recovered some wood from it earlier and still had a part of a mighty branch that must have been dead for at least 40 years, but was shielded from rain and completely dry and rock-hard.
So I cross-cut a thin slice of that wood which now showed dozens of annual rings. Then I carefully removed Syph's original copper-cross without damaging it. (Don't do a stunt like that. Syph made sure that this solid piece of copper sits in place without any gap, rock-solid, it took me ages to find a means of carefully applying an enormous force to make it move. Sorry and cheers, Syph - you did an awesome job!)
Then I took the copper cross as a model for the small wooden cross, which I carefully marked, cut, filed and then impregnated in hot linseed-oil.
After a week of drying, I made some adjustments with lots of light and time, a good magnifying glass and a scalpel.
The cross already fits well, and even though the pictures don't show it, it has the great pattern of its annual-rings.
Now it's waiting for another week to be fitted, glued and polished- I want the wood to sit as tight and plane as the copper did.
Thanks for reading, I'll give you an update if you like.

That's awesome!
The copper should have been about half way through and the backing of it was metal based epoxy. I put that in there to support the cross as I was worried the copper was too soft and might move if struck. It's good to know it was hard to remove!

Thank you all, I really appreciate your kind words!!
Syph, a special thanks to you, and you can rest assured - the copper inlay will never, never unintentionally leave its place.
The epoxy alone took half an hour to give in, and the copper sat snugly and told various of my tools "just nope". The copper filled and fitted the inner surface of the cross cutout perfectly, and at first I suspected it could be soldered. Made for eternity, if no mad Bavarian interferes ;-)
I'll update here when everything is finished, the cross sits evenly and everything is polished !

Thank you for your kind words, gentlemen!
Today I finally decided that the linseed-varnish had had enough time to dry, so I prepared knife and cross for their "marriage".
I put some sticky tape on the inside of the scale (so that no glue would creep inside), punched a very small hole in the middle of that tape, so that air and surplus-glue could exit ( easy to clean off the droplet which was pushed out when inserting the cross) and coated the inside off the cutout-cross with a good layer of Uhu-Endfest 300.
My EDC-Nomad was good help here (can you spot the error in the picture?) and finally the wooden cross rested in the right place, protruding only a fraction of a milimetre.
In 24 hours I will remove the tape, polish the wood and see what I've done.
Thank's for watching!

The deed is done- The now polished wood has a different colour from every angle, from almost pitch black to a vivid red-brown.
I'm happy that this great tree will now accompany me everywhere I go, as a small part and a fond memory.
