Impressed with Sugru
on: June 08, 2016, 10:19:26 PM
Sorry, no cool project, but simply fridge magnets. We have some neodymium magnets on our fridge. They are so strong they are a bit difficult to remove, especially since they are chrome plated (and therefore have a very smooth surface). So, I used some Sugru to add a knob to each of them. But, why are you impressed, Steinar? I am impressed because I didn't degrease the magnets, and the Sugru still stuck properly. There aren't that many products which adhere well to a chromed surface with residue of skin oils.

I've heard great things about the stuff but I've never used it myself.

I've been thinking of getting some of it recently to try and fix the battery cover on my GPS.
I have a Garmin GPSMAP 60cs and the small bottom tab broke on me, a common problem as far as I've seen. Now it's an older unit and parts areno longer available here and to shell out $20-$30 for one from the states is a bit too much.
So i thought I might try making the broken part out of Sugru and attaching it to the rest of the battery cover. Do you think it would hold?

I have the same unit.  Nice device, although I don't use it much these days.

It's a great unit, very reliable and I use it a lot. And as I plan to spend about a 3 weeks this summer in areas few people have ever been, I'd love it if my navigation device wasn't ducttaped together. :P

Yeah I can see the appeal of that!

I think it's worth trying if the part doesn't need to be very stiff. Sugru seems pretty strong, but it becomes a silicone rubber when cured, not a stiff plastic.

You can also make a DIY substitute for Sugru with cornstarch and 100% silicone caulking.

Sugru is great stuff.  It's surprisingly adhesive and durable.  I've used it for many things, but my favorite use so far is this:
