Finally frozen enough
on: January 29, 2007, 02:30:20 AM
The lake across the road from my house has finally frozen enough for people to skate on.  It's been a few years since it was solid enough, but now it's got at least 7-8 inches over the whole thing.  I can't skate due to some busted joints, but it was nice to see some other folks getting out there to enjoy it.

Funny thing is, my siberian husky won't go on the ice.  Poor guy has never really spent any time on the ice and so he's a little scared of it.  He knows that this is the place where we normally go swimming and it confuses him that he's walking on water!

I'd say that's a sign of a pretty smart dog frankly. It means he's thinking both concretely and abstractly, and knows that places and things are associated. I've met some dogs that don't have the first idea of anything, and think that if it quacks like a duck, it must be a squirrel.

You should see some of the dogs here in LA; it's like they had lobotomies at birth.

In my experience, the behavior of the dog says a lot about its owner.   :P

Hey the dog has its own personality. I mean I had a black lab that hated the water!

I have a golden lab that's petrified of water. He's adopted, so I'm guessing he had some serious abuse issues early on.

Most likely that is the case, cuz i got mine that way and it certainly was abused by water. The prior owner used to keep her outside 24/7 and sprayed her when she barked. Even in the winter.

Funny thing is he never complained when I took her from him. I was lucky and had 13 great years  with her.

Just take good care of him, He might allways be afraid of  water, but they know when they are with someone who cares.

Had to go to hospital yesterday for a scan ( nothing to worry about , I was very ill 11 years ago and I have to have a scan every year to make sure it doesnt come back ) .Anyway I had the choice of two hospitals to go to , first one was the main hospital in the nearest main city ( Norwich ) about 25 miles away , second was a smaller hospital on the coast about 15 miles north ( Cromer )  .I chose the latter as I wanted to visit the lifeboat museum and have chips on the pier . English chips are what you guys in the U.S call fries but are thicker and fatter then fries and softer

Anyway although it wasnt as cold as Canada it was flipping freezing and the wind was comming straight off the North Sea , its funny as Its only 15miles from where I live and I look out on the same Sea   ::) but it seemed colder , maybe cause we were a bit higher  ???. heres a few pics I took

Sorry to ramble on  ::) And for those interested I EDC'd a Vic Swisstool RS and a Climber  :D

Oops... apparently I forgot to post!

I looked at these yesterday and thought the pics were so nice I called my wife away from whatever crappy TV show she was watching to have a look!

There's all kinds of museums and stuff like that here as well, but very little of it is that nice.

Funny you should mention the Batman Utility Belt.  I was always accused of being overly prepared as well when I used to do security work.  I have qualifications and certificates well into the double digits and carried equipment for almost everything- at one point I actually had to hang stuff on a drop-leg sheath because I needed the room on my belt for other stuff!  Mind you, I wear a much bigger belt now....

I'm sure that is on purpose though, to allow you to carry more gear, right?  Right?  ;)

Dunc ,

Are those rigid keel Avons in the pics ? How are they ?

Yes its an Avon 5.4 metre Searider , with double skinned flooding hull with a Mariner 75hp outboard. Our new boat which is still being fitted out is a Avon Adventure - A 580 Open with commercial tubes and sealed hull , with a 90hp Mercury .
