Your favorite Swiss combination
on: June 12, 2016, 05:14:49 PM
What is your favorite SAK combination? In your EDC system or not, it can be anything, from Classic to SwissTool.

Personally I've become a fan of tiered approach to EDC lately. So for me, a perfect Swiss combination is as follows:

1) Victorinox Classic on keychain, together with the "Quattro" screwdriver. These are tiny and cheap yet useful - I have them 24/7 in my trousers pocket. I simply forget about them until I need them and they never ever get out of my EDC rotation.
+
2) When I am not doing any work besides going to college and doing small everyday chores, I'll usually add a 91 mm SAK (usually a Climber or Tinker) and carry it in a jeans watch pocket. Sometimes I skip this SAK and replace it with a similarly sized non-Swiss OHO locking folder, but usually (80% of the time) I have a 91 mm SAK on me.
+
3) When I am out doing part time jobs or some work needs to be done, I'll add a SwissTool (I have the plus version in a leather sheath). In that case, I can sometimes omit the 91mm SAK. The SwissTool is excellent; extraordinarily capable MT. I am carrying it in a bag, so the weight doesn't really concern me. If I expect some serious, dirty or risky cutting, I'll add a non-Swiss large locking folder, but that's really, really rare.

My current carry is minimalist, but I always have the combination of a SwissChamp SOS kit and Spirit plus in my tool bag that goes everywhere with me. Usually nowadays just a single 2-3 layer 91 or 93mm is enough for pocket carry. I have tried so many combinations it makes my head spin. :ahhh

Also I keep a Farmer, Wenger Clipper, and a Käsemesser around for use at home.  :tu:

For me it's the Vic Tinker around the house and the Deluxe Tinker (in belt pouch) when out.

I have often combined a Classic and a Spartan. Two very standard knives I feel complement eachother very well. Lower weight than a Climber, and the Climber hasn't got the magic screwdriver on the 58 mm which fits "everything".

I'm leaning towards a RangerGrip 61 (OHO-blade, openers including corkscrew) and Classic combo for outdoor trips. They really compliment each other (slightly considering the 79 (+saw) or 68 (-OHO) too).

For daily use I'm going with the simple combo of a tourist (lately replaced with a Wenger Wood series Commander) and a SwissCard Lite (mainly for scissors and Quattro driver).

I am a fan of the tiered approach as well.

Keychain - Executive
Pocket - Explorer
Sheath - Spirit X
Work - Swisstool
Folder - OH Sentienl Serrated

And this is by situation of course. So if I got the Spirit on my I don't carry the Explorer. So depending on my task will determine what to carry. Although I rotate frequently, these are my favorites.

Very much agree on the Rangers for outdoors, and you DO want the saw.

My usual outdoor combo is a RangerClip 178 (Wenger with factory clip)
and Traveller Lite.

For me, a Tinker/Highlander and either the Mighty Minichamp or Evo 81.  If I'm out in the woods, it's either my Huntsman, Handyman or Hiker.

The car is currently holding a Rescue Tool and SwissTool RS. The Rescue Tool got added after a few worrying incidents around me on the road recently.

At the computer there is an alox Cadet, which works for most of my urgent needs here, but is always complimented by one from the main set in my pocket.

The main set is a collection that mostly weigh between 120 grams and 140 grams. They are a Mountaineer Lite (always taken on travel), Explorer (day to day use, lighter than others here), Delemont S557 (day to day use), One Handed Trekker non serrated (the most common 'go to'), Delemont RangerGrip 68 (when I want a massive knife).

That leaves two that hang around with a special purpose. There is a Leatheman Surge black oxide for around the house where weight does not matter and a 2012 Damascus Trekker, which is a 'special occasions' carry.

So I realised that the question is not answered! Usual combinations in practice:
- Car: SwissTool RS; Rescue Tool and (S557 or Explorer).
- Computer: Cadet with Trekker or 68.
- Travel: SwissTool RS; Mountaineer Lite and Trekker.
- House - Inside: Trekker or 68.
- House - Outside: Surge and Trekker.
- Events - S557 or Delemont Trekker.

All up, this overview incomes my current 'in use' ten SAK's :)

Here's some of my combo's. Mix matching SAK's is a great way to maximize the tools need the most and minimise the tool you need less for the day.
Jeep the SAK of the auto world or is it SAK the Jeep of the Knife world?

Nice thoughts everyone.

IG11? What is that, a new 58mm SAK model?    That would be an EDI item (EveryDay Intimidate)...
