Just to play Devil's advocate a bit. When you get the job, would you ask for permission to carry a Stanley knife if you had to cut something or for that matter even a screwdriver.

I suppose its all about perception.   Its a funny world country.  When exactly did carrying a SAK change from marking you as a prepared Scout/Guide to being a teenage ninja mutant hooded terrorist?

Wow, if that last sentence doesn't get flagged on some government trouble search I don't know what will ;)

Neil

Your bang on the money mate, having a Sak is, to my mind at least a good thing, as there's nowt wrong with being prepared + it's the enviromentally right thing to do :)

Well I'm gonna leave my Farmer at home while I have the interview (boy is that gonna be a wench, the bloody thing never leaves my side these day's ) But I have decided that I definetly want to go down the Swiss route, no Sog's or Fuse's for me :)

So I guess we're right back at modefied Sak's again :-\

Madly a SwissTool is seen as less of a "threat" than a SAK by some and on school grounds the whole thing about locks and blade size is irrelavant as you need good reason for all sharp and pointy things.

That is a VERY good point :)

And to be honest it would be damn useful in the job because I'd be responsible for erecting/dismantling stage equipment too :)

I think Neil has hit on a good point here.

I think quite a few UK knife owners are getting a little bit paranoid to be honest.  If you were going on a picnic, you wouldn't bat an eyelid to take a knife to spread your jam, but many would think twice about taking a SAK to fulfil this task because they are worried about how it will be perceived.  With regards to a groundskeeping job (like Neil said) people would probably not even think twice about grabbing a stanley knife to do a cutting task, yet people would worry more about having a SAK in their pocket.

I think people need to gain some perspective.  Sure, there are laws in this country which govern the carrying of knives, but we need to be realistic.  It makes me laugh when members worry about carrying a Swisscard because of the fixed blade.  :D  Come on guys, the police do have better things to be doing.

Wow, got a little ranty there.  :D  As regards to your groundskeeping job, my main focus for today would be the interview and worry about tool specifics at a later date.  I am sure though, that you will be fine to carry any SAK and multitool.  I know the guys where I work certainly do.

Thanks for the wise council Ben  (who'd of thought it coming from you :P)

Yeah I think a lot of us, certainly me, are more than a tad paranoid. But I can't get my head around the whole not being aloud to carry one, although in truth I will carry a sak anyway and just be descrete ;)

It was about time I said something that made sense.  :D

The way I see it is if the chef can have a knife, why couldn't you?  You both have jobs to do.

I blame the daily opinionpapers.  They just stir, hype and report (wrong word) whatever makes Jo Bloggs pick it up in the morning.  Yesterday I was at the post office sending a SAK to the US.  On the customs form it said Swiss Army Knife.  The postmaster got right funny and said he wasn't sure that could go via Royal Mail... prat  >:(

I think you are right.

What makes me laugh is that before I joined here I never worried about carrying a tool, but since I signed up I am very aware of what I have on me.

Just carry your SAK. There's no way that you'd be able to do a job as a groundsman without a blade. Whether it's in your pocket or in a toolkit is irrelevant IMO.

I used to come here a lot.

Just carry it.  If you are spotted with it, and they have a problem, you can sort it out then.
