Built Different ..... LY
on: July 15, 2025, 01:44:13 PM
Well I am sure everyone here has seem LM's new catch phrase for the new blade only models

So WARNING:
A serious OCD / whinging Pom (what the Aussies call me down here ;) ) / grammar pedant comment coming up   :ahhh   8)

So I assume this phase describes how LM build these new tools?   ???
In which case 'different' is an adverb (describing build) and therefore the word should be 'differently'.

Using an adjective in place of and adverb is a common mistake in the English language, but IMHO it's a shame LM have not used English correctly for such an important message from their company! I wonder if they realise this?
Or maybe they intentionally used this phrase, as it is more catchy? More common? More understandable?

Thoughts !   ???

Ha Ha!

When a company is creating solely on IMAGINATION, it would seem practical abuse of the English language and creating new words to describe that IMAGINATION is expected.
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

That's not the first grammar mistake I have seen on Leatherman's ads/posts.  That said, the English language is weird, especially when the writer is trying to convey a more casual or conversational tone.   Is that what they were doing?  Maybe?   :dunno:

I get triggered by grammar mistakes as well.  Increasingly, we see "people that" instead of "people who", or "less people" instead of "fewer people".  Or the word "whenever" is used when it should be "when".

:ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh

But ultimately, there is no Golden Rulebook for grammar.  Rather, what is "correct" is determined by common usage, and common usage changes over time.  What used to be improper is now proper.

Maybe Leatherman is on the cutting edge [<<< pun] of some new grammar.

But I don't have to like it.

You know what bugged me more?  The new Wave Alpha being a premium Wave - I'm assuming they're using "alpha" like Gen-Z does for anything that's the best.  Yeah, alpha has meant that before Gen-Z, but now I find the term irritating.  I guess I'm just becoming a crotchety old fart.

"Built different" is pretty common slang in the US. The most common use I see is, "I'm/they're just built different." It's usually positive, though sometimes with a connotation of weirdness. For example, if someone chugs a shot of hot sauce you might say, "He's just built different." It's impressive, but not necessarily something you want to do.

It's not a phrase I'd associate with a "luxury EDC brand" or whatever Leatherman is trying to be these days, but it would make sense if they were trying to attract a younger or more urban audience.

Yeah - Thanks BPR -

I would estimate that across the US population and corporations
"Built different" is used 95% of the time "Built differently" is used 5% of the time - Maybe even less!!   :o
So this is common parlance - And for the rest of the English speaking world too!

Anyway, being the anal, grammatical pedant* that I am, I had to let LM know about this   :pok:     ;)     :D
Here's the reply I received - Pretty promptly too - I'll say  :tu: :salute:
...... I was kind of expecting no reply, (or did not deserve one) as I am clearly a * - See above

I think powernoodle's point about there not being a golden rule book is not quite right   :pok:
But I think maybe he means that any individual, company or even country is free to use language in any way they like, and as a consequence many 'incorrect' conventions have been commonly adopted? ???

However that does not mean that there is not a golden rule book.

But to ThundahBeagle's point - I think that it cannot be "Strunk and White'   :o

I must admit I had never heard of Strunk and White - So had to look it up.
Seems like a good and seminal book - ie Instructing people on good grammar and concise use of language.

However, I don't think that a book written by a couple of American (ie US) professors of English about the use of American English can be regarded as the golden rule book for the English language

Mr. Webster and his crew intentionally diverged American English (at least spelling) from its original form in the early 19th century and since then it has continued to diverge! So I guess you could regard that publication as the rule book for US English!
There are some interesting comments in the 'Reception' section of the Wikipedia page on that book!!   :o    ;)
