New to Gerber - 400 or 600? or diesel? or... ?
on: July 05, 2016, 06:40:08 PM
Hi all,
I've been tempted by a Gerber MultiTool now for quite a while, what first took my attention was the 400 Compact Sport, which has a nice tool selection for me and it's smaller than the 600 line, which may be a good thing.

But what about the 600 line? I see most threads here are about the 600, and since here the 400 and the 600 have similar prices maybe it's better if I investigate on them (which means asking you :))

Also the diesel one has a similar price, what about it?

Which one do you prefer and why?

I already have a Swisstool, a Charge TTI  and a Crunch as multitools, if this helps, and I find myself carrying either the Charge or the Crunch over the swisstool.
The Charge because along with the bit sets and the extender is quite capable, while being smaller, while when I bring the Crunch it's because it is small and light (and yet it's the best one if you have to un-tight a bolt, as it grips and you can use your force just to un-screw the bugger...)

Thanks in advance!!

Danilo

IMO the 600 isn't any bigger in carry than the 400, especially when you consider the added durability and tool set.

I guess I am the opposite as I prefer the MP400 over the 600 :D I have had a 600 for ages and never carried it as I felt it to bulky for the toolset it has I guess  I have just recently been given a MP400 by another member here (Demel) and I find that I love the size of the 400 enough that when the Supertool challenge is over this month I will carry the 400 in rotation as a weekend tool :tu:

Just my 2 cents though ;)

Whew, tough one  When it comes to deciding between one or the other, I would tell you to take a good look at what you need the tool for. Knowing that you prefer your Charge and Crunch instead of your SwissTool, I think I'd recommend you get the MP400.

Remember, the MP600 ProScout offers a very similar tool load to the Charge. So capability would be close to what you are used to, even if the size is greater

The mp400 is one of Gerber's best offerings. Understanding what is offers will help you appreciate it all the more. 😠

As I am lucky to have a small collection of 600's and one 400, I really like both, however the 400 is a great carry, all I can suggest is get both!

So,
the Gerber 400 arrived yesterday, I've been trying to get some pictures of it, but my phone's camera isn't working - frigging phones...

First impressions: the tool is nice and small, the sliding pliers head is very ingenious, and overall I like it very much.

I haven't used it that much, I've just needed the pliers once to bend some aluminium, they worked great of course.

I'm glad I went for the 400, its small size is a plus for me.

Danilo

EDIT: ah, I almost forgot it: the scissors are great! one of the best out there!

Happy to hear that you got it and are enjoying it :tu: Although, I am not surprised - it is a great, little tool

Glad to hear you have it and that you are already taking a liking to it  The size of the 400 is one of its best features over the 600 IMO :tu:

I own both but the 600 is my favorite. It's funny when compared next to some other multitools it looks large but to me it fits so nicely in hand and the weight is actually very reasonable too IMO. It's a sturdy beast and to share a little history, I had a pro-scout about 13 years ago that I put through absolute hell and it never failed me.

That said, I do love my custom 400 also and would recommend either of these tools.

I feel the same way regarding the size/weight of the 600. It does look big but it doesn't weight a lot in relation to the size. And its comfy in hand and is very well balanced :tu:
