What do I do?
on: November 30, 2017, 12:31:05 AM
I'm beginning to have a bit of a minor crisis. I've got too many "junk" knives, which to me is a cheap low-end Chinese made bargain bin knife, largely the 5-layer and Classic-clone keychain knives, among others, to the tune of a couple quart Ziploc bags and a lunchbox full. They came along with lots, which I got for a bargain, considering only the one or two I bought the lot for in the first place.

I have three options I'm going through--chuck them all, give them to people I don't like (when I know they're crap, I don't want anyone  trusting their lives to them), or barter them at a flea market for something decent (they always have big boxes of Chinese knives in rough shape). The third is the option I plan to go with.

So, what do you guys think I should do?

Bartering at the flea market would be cool

Take the simple knives and donate them to the local scouts, they always need practice knives to practice sharpening.

Build a potato canon.

Adapt potato to be a sabot

Demonstrate your knife throwing skills at long distance.

I won a science fair with a potato cannon once in middle school, shot the thing something like 500 yards.

I like the idea of bartering at the fleamarket.  I also like the idea that some scouts would get some good training at sharpening with those.

You can try, but I doubt you could trade them off at a flea market because the dealers probably don't have any more use for the junk knives than you do.  I sell knives at flea markets a few times a year and when I have a bunch of used junk knives I fill up a bucket with them and sell them for a buck or two.  That's all they're worth.  It's mostly the trades guys who buy them.  They're all happy to show me that they're carrying high end knives such as Benchmades and Spydercos, but they tell me they don't like to mess up their good knives opening bags of ready mix or paint cans and that sort of thing.  Everybody else only wants to look at the shiny, new knives, or the old, collectible knives.

Scouts get my vote.
  • little time invested
  • zero hassle
  • high utility gained
  • promotes knife skills in a younger generation

I have a bunch of junk/cheapo knives that I hereby pledge to donate similarly on my side of the pond.

Go to a park. Give one to every kid whose parents aren't in sight. :D

I personally couldn't sell them in good conscience. Or... no... I think I could, but for like $1 each.

The scout idea is fantastic, IMO. That is probably also a tax write-off for the purchase price of the item.

This is precisely what I was going to say. They would make a good giveaway for the boys of a local troop to learn on.
