Please Help Me Identify - C. Everts Germany
on: July 10, 2016, 07:59:45 PM
Hi Everyone,

Picked this up at the flea market today, and can't find anything about it online. The blade tang is marked "C. Everts Germany." Seems to be pretty good quality, and thought it was pretty cool with the adjustable wrench, drill and (I assume) marlin spike. Anyone know more about this knife or manufacturer?

Thanks for your help!

I think I've seen pictures of a few of these around.  I suspect they were made by one manufacturer (in Solignen, Germany ?) who labelled them for whoever wanted to order them at the time. I have one with "Griffon" stamped on the knife tang.  My guess is they were made around the 1960's, but if Bob happens to see this I'm sure he will have better info.

There is another similar tool made in Japan (with an amusing "Rude Monkey" variant to add to the interest).

Jeez, did you have to shine that thing right in my eyes?! :o I'm trying to nap over here for cryin' out loud :P

 :D

Yep, Greg pretty much nailed it. These "moveable top jaw monkey wrench knives" as I call them, were produced in Germany and tang stamped with numerous different importer brand names. Griffon is seen more often than most, but I've also got ones marked Hoffritz, Voss Cutlery, PAL, and Bonsa. One that came by way of France is stamped Monopol, and one that came by way of England is simply stamped "Foreign."

Yours is the first I've seen with a C. Everts stamping.

The earliest magazine advertisements I've seen are from the 1950's, including those shown below. I have not seen any evidence that these tools were around prior to WWII.

Popular Science, Feb. 1951

Bennett Bros. Catalog, 1956

Hope that helps!
Bob :)

I would be awesome to have a JSews compilation thread.  Such a wealth of information.  While we're at it I'd love to see a JazzBass compilation thread.

For what its worth the tool ( mine ) seems to be made quite well.  The monkey wrench is pretty neat.

Bob put a lot of his info (don't know how much as he probably still has more knowledge in his head on the subject ;) ) into the MT Encyclopedia

He sure does know MTs though :o

There is, but regretfully it was made before MTO so it's on BladeForums

Before there was Leatherman……

Wow, a lot more information than I could have expected. Looks like there are more of these pre-Leatherman MTs out there for me to find.

Thanks everyone!
