Kampfer’s EDC Evolution
on: July 12, 2016, 11:52:21 PM
The story begun around 1999, when I found a SAK at my friend’s step-father home, it was just sitting in a drawer doing nothing, so he gave it to me. It was a handy little gadget and I kept it on my key ring for a while. It was too heavy for key ring really, after I started driving later that year, I took it off and kept it nearby until it MIA after we move in our new home in 2010. Later I learned that SAK was called the “Mechanic”.

In 2002, I purchased a Swiss+Tech Utili-key 6-in-1 (Made in USA) as my keychain tool. It doesn’t offer much but a few basic functions are covered. It stays on my key ring every single day ever since then.

Fast forward to Dec 2013, I was shopping in Home Depot, the $20 Leatherman Wingman caught my attention, bought it and really impressed by its OHO blade and pocket clip. I couldn’t believe how easy to carry a MT and how useful it could be! Researching it on internet led me to MT.o, that really sucked me into the MT madness.

Everyone on MT.o were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. I rapidly upgrade to a Sidekick, then Wave, then Surge within my first month of MT addiction. By Apr 2014, Breezy12 helped me to construct my first custom MT, the infamous Mini-Surge.

Mini-Surge was as close to the perfect MT as it gets, but it didn’t stop me from exploring other options, I carried different MT throughout the years for experiment, and the Skeletool/Micra combo remains as one of my favored.

By June 2015 I mostly settled on the setup of one light weight mid-size MT plus a dedicated folder as my EDC.  The search for perfect MT and folders goes on.

My current EDC took shape in Jan 2016 after I failed the “SOG Power Challenge”, I begun to carry a Victorinox Spirit and a Cold Steel mega folder. Life is good and I have no complaints on the setup whatsoever.

It's amazing how similar the stories are, and yet I never tire of hearing them from other people.

For the most part we all seem to fall into the same category- at some point we all had an enlightenment that changed the way we view them forever.  You go form someone remarkably unprepared and oblivious to someone who can face almost anything the world throws at you, and it's often the result of something simple, like someone giving you a SAK.

I wasn't aware that your first multi was a Wingman- I guess from that there was nowhere to go but up!  :D
