What is the shield on the Vic S54 made of?
on: July 13, 2016, 04:28:26 AM
Just got back into knives after a few year's break.  Today I had and EvoGrip S54 (the old Wenger Tool Chest Plus) arrive.

One of the first things I noticed was the shield.  At first I thought it was just some kind of sticker, but after poking around with my fingernail it does seem to be made of stronger stuff...but maybe not much!

I'm curious, what is it made from?  Is it sturdy?  How is it attached.   Do the black grips hold up well?  Part of me is nervous about needing a tough grip for a tough job thinking I might screw up the shield somehow  :)  I've done some snooping on the net (and will continue) but haven't turned up anything so far.

I think it's made of plastic molded into the scales, but may be a lithograph of some sort

I disassembled an Evolution 101 some time ago (so not an EvoGrip) and on that one the white shield was plastic and was visible from the inside. It seemed very well made and it should hold up at least as well as the metal shields on any Victorinox.
