An idea
on: July 25, 2016, 03:49:04 PM
So yesterday in church my mind wondered to a kayaking trip I am mentally planing.  Since I want to do this trip cheap my plan is to sleep in my truck (don't have a tent and I can lay out in the bed/cab of my Avalanche just seems easiest), but it will probably be some time in  August so hot and with bugs.

Now my idea is get some netting or screen material then attach magnets to it so I can put it on the doors over the windows that way the windows can be down and bugs can't get in.

Has anyone tried this, or have any thoughts?

If your car is on there it even gives a drawing of the size for them  :tu:

I used to have an Avalanche  :salute:.  I say it sure can be done.  A nice air mattress or foam for your bed along with netting should easily provide protection from skeeters.  I'd also recommend using Permethrin on the netting and your clothing.

You can buy netting by the yard and fabricate something useful.

EDIT  found this.  Might be more than you want to do but velcro instead of snaps might be the way to go?

Years ago when I put a bed and curtains in my van I also bought insect mesh and magnets with a view to puitting them up on the inside... I never did that....

If the bugs are persistent they will find their way in through any small gaps, so try to make sure all edges are sealed.  And the mesh is fine enough to keep out any small biteys.

Maybe use flexible magnetic strips ?  something like this:

Just make sure the magnets are strong enough to hold even in windy conditions.

If it is hot at night a small battery operated fan may help you cool down.

I find being prepared helps camping be more enjoyable, but YMMV  :)

Right now I am trying to work out the magnet part,  really need to go off to a big store and pick some things up like an air mattress and maybe see what netting I can get.  Which granted the netting is likely more for peace of mind then actual bug stopping power.  I'm actually growing sort of immune to the annoyance of bug bites, thanks to working on a swampy island.

Like the idea of the fan, had not thought of that.  Fortunately the temperature is getting down to vaguely comfortable.
