Stray pieces fell out of my wave
on: August 01, 2016, 02:54:27 PM
Hi All

Bought a black wave recently. Was checking it over and 2 pieces fell out (image attached). I can't figure out what they are. They don't seem to effect the function of the tool. Any ideas?

Cheers.

They look like the 2 bars with the pins on that prevent the blades being opened when you have the pliers open.

The bottom half of the bars in the pics below. There should be one in each handle

That's what they look like to me too.  Very unnecessary part in my opinion.

Hi Kevin

Thanks for the quick reply. I think you are spot on. That internal part is broken on both sides! Got me baffled how that has happened

No problem, glad I could help.

I would hazard a guess that the previous owner broke them off rather than them breaking off during use.  As Aberdrew13 said, they aren't really needed. It's a safety feature that leatherman built in but doesn't do anything towards operation of the tool.

Thanks for the welcomes (and the dancing fruit  :D).

While you're here - any tips for confirming my wave is genuine? Bought as a new one but off eBay. Pretty sure it is genuine but I'm, surprised at these broken pieces. And the pliers bent slightly when I tried to use them to force open a rusted ratchet (see pic).

Plus I broke the scissors (my own stupid fault - folded them down the wrong way in a rush ). Can I replace them?

It is a Leatherman Wave for sure!

Never seen a bent tip so sharp lol, I'm sure you can find replacement parts around here. However BO is a pretty penny

Especially if you went with a BO Rebar Head ;)

In all reality if you mod the tool you will loose the warranty. If I were you I would send it back if you don't have multiples. They should replace all the parts if you check "sentimental" on the warranty form, otherwise they will send you a new one.

Whoa I'm surprised to see it bent like that. My experience has been that the pliers are pretty tough and they are flexible (and thus, retain their shape back no matter how much pressure I applied).

Can you also post a photo of the broken scissors?

That wave should go back to Leatherman for repair or replacement under warranty.  They are obviously defective with soft metal for some reason, maybe you got the one that was heat treated by the apprentice, and you don't need to sit around and wait for something else to break.

It might just be the BO but I couldn't see a date stamp on yours? (should be visible near where your broken bits came from)

I would send for warranty, or make a claim against Ebay - You've bought it New in good faith, and it clearly isn't meeting LM standards.

I'd try Ebay claim first - It's not (necessarily) LMs fault that you got sold a dud, or that you tried to save a few dollars by buying something sight unseen.

Do they always have a date stamp? I can't find one on either side

Have a look below the 2-2.5 inch mark on the inside, and below the 15-16mm marks. The pics you have show the wrong side. There should be 4 numbers like 0813 like in my Surge which indicates it was made in August 2013

It looks like the handle of the scissors just "broke off", there is no trace of bending? How is this possible? This is not a fragile material?

Thanks Pete. Good tip. I'll try the vendor I bought it off first. I suspect he is a grey importer. I assume that type of thing is rife with Leatherman tools. If I get no love from him (which I suspect will be the case - I paid cash and the transaction ended up not going via eBay - doh!) then I'll try Zen. Cheers.

I'd definitely try and get a warranty repair on that one. Those "prong" things do serve a purpose, as they provide a bit of resistance and tension to the ramps on the rounded base of the plier head. They don't bear any significant force, but they help to stop the handles flopping around at the point the handle meets the the plier.

When your tool is new and there's some friction there naturally you won't notice a difference, but as the tool wears with use it might start to irritate you!

This pic is actually a Leatherman Charge, but its just the same and you can see how the prongs are designed to "snug up" to the ramps on the pliers.

I used to come here a lot.

 ???

It looks to me that the plier head around the pivot is more circular than the ovalish of the newer style? (could be the light)

and the, let's call it the "finger choil" on the scissors appears less pronounced than the one in my hand.

I've not tracked the minor changes in the Wave particularly closely (or at all), someone here might be able to say if either of those issues are of any significance (or if they are even points, or if my eyes are deceiving me)

Zen do have excellent service.

You might take a moment to ponder taking something you bypassed the importer to get to said importer for a warranty claim.

Spoke to the vendor today. He is standing by the stated LM 25 year warranty. So that sounds promising.

As for my last post about the shape of the plier head and scissors - I'm looking at the pictures now on a different screen and everything seems normal.

Happy days. Got the right result. The vendor honoured the warranty and swapped the broken one for a brand new one, no questions asked.

Thanks for your input everyone.
