Who is a fan of the ECO line ?
on: September 14, 2008, 05:47:53 PM
I like Alox ,am not fond of Cellidor, and generally find the nylon scaled beasts the most practical. They seem to survive the slings an arrows of the workplace better than the more tarty materials. I find the ruffed texture about perfect for griping. It also has better solvent and bugjuice resistance. It only has one strike against it,lack of that pretty inlaid sheild. Cellidor is just too pretty to put in a front trouser pocket with all those nasty coins an keys.

I like Eco scales better than cellidor for the reasons you mentioned.. Also, I have three Eco scaled models.. A Climber, Lumberjack, and a Sportsman II. I think I remember reading that they are lower quality than the cellidor models.. I think I read that they are less polished or something.. Please, tell me if this is true or not!

The quality isn't any lower on the Eco line,no blems or seconds are used.I think what you might be thinking is that QC checks aren't as rigorous as the cellidor and Alox lines.

I'd be fine with nylon if they'd just add the alox shield.  For a practical pocket tool the nylon is superior, just doesn't look as pretty :D

Nylon is a much better scale material than plastic/cellidor.

Alox, IMHO, is better than all of those, though.

Not a fan myself.  I picked up a Sportsman II to see what all the fuss was about and I just don't get it.  I like all the little dings and nicks the Cellidor gets, you can see that it has done some work and not sat in a drawer.   The Nylon really does feel cheap to me and wouldn't go out my way to get some again.  Horses for courses I suppose.

It feels and looks cheap to me too.  Nylon is more practical from a durability and chemical resistance standpoint, but I'll take Cellidor for the feel every time.

....unless it's Stayglow.  :D

SG Scales are made of (or are at least similar in texture to) nylon, yes?

I actually really like the nylon scales. I don't like the idea that if I get the wrong kind of fluid on my knife that it's going to dissolve. The tinfoil shield is kind of ugly, but it's more of a preference than a real annoyance. Alox takes a very close second if only because that it can either be really cold or really hot to handle, depending on the weather; I handled my car-Farmer when it was up around 100 degrees a couple weeks ago...nearly burned my hand hehe.

The cellidor looks better, but the nylon is grippier.

Too bad they don't do nylon with the inlaid logo like the one they do on the cellidor.

I have been carrying my Eco Sportsman II for a bit over a week and really like it.  Except for the scales! I have just swapped the scales over from a beat up old Waiter and now the Sportsman feels like a real SAK.  The problem is that I appreciate the fact that the Nylon is harder wearing and all that, but it’s just not what SAKs should feel like.  :(

Its a dilema isn't it. I picked up my modded 74mm that I EDC this morning and noticed some nasty marks on the front.  Its not that old and I'd put new scales on it.  :-\

I wish there was more nylon scales available , just works better for a hard user, and better grippiness. Now if they would just do it with the inlaid shield all would be well.

Heya Kids!

I noticed a difference between my Eco blade & Waiter Blade.

Can someone get some close-up macro shots of where the blade meets the tang, showing the spine as well?

(I know about the different stamps on the blade, but this is do with the the shape/grind or something)

On the topic of Blades, is there any difference in the main spear blades s from genre to genre in the main Vic range? (84-93mm)

Yes, the newer blades have a slightly narrower tang that doesn't "step down" on the grind to the blade.  There is a dimple in the aluminum liner to take up the extra space created by the new grind.  I hope that makes sense, it's not easy to describe.

The change in the grind effects all of the officer's knives and isn't specific to just the ECO or Cellidor lines.  It came about around 2006 for the 91mm knives, and earlier than that in the 84mm.
