Back on the Rebar mod:  I forgot to mention the difficulty in deploying the file.  With no nail nick on the exposed side, it's tough.  It doesn't likely help that I had added the mini bit driver in place of the lanyard ring, and I think the bit driver is a teensy bit thicker, so it's tight in there anyway.  It's also possible the PST II file is slightly thicker than the Rebar file, but I'm not sure.

So I have to deploy all the middle tools so that I can get the file out.  Not a big deal for me I suppose since I use my MTs only occasionally.

Could try cutting a nick in the end of the file similar to the new Waves file  It is tapered so that may not help ???

I considered that, but couldn't be bothered last night.  I may attempt it sometime.

I decided to use the file from my old original PST to check to see if it would lock. I didn't want to use my diamond file but they are the same profile.

Notch

Lock up

I made the notch just a hair wider than the Rebar file taking a bit more off the back where the rounded portion is.  The file does lock up
with just a little play. It is a bugger to deploy. I think it would work better to switch positions with the the knife blade. You would then have the cut out in the handle for the file and the nail nick would still be on the right side for the knife blade.

So it does have less material to cause it to be loose.  I'm not crazy then ;)  Does yours come unlocked with some force?  Mine does lock, but it doesn't take much to force it unlocked without releasing the lock.

I couldn't get it to come unlocked. The amount of wiggle was just a bit more than the Rebar file. I wonder if you were to fine tune your notch a bit at the back if it wouldn't lock.   :tu:

I wondered if I may have removed a bit too much from that notch.  It gets hard to tell while doing the cutting in such a small spot.

I had wondered if changing places with the knife would make it more accessible  I would only be worried if it was a knife blade :o and then it isn't an extremely big deal since the other handle should prevent it from closing on your fingers

I think only if you rounded the back even more. If you removed too much from the front of the notch it would cause the file to open too far but I don't think it would affect the lock up. If you look at my picture you can see I purposely created a nice 90 degree angle at the back of the notch.  That is where the lock engages.

I also noted that the Rebar file notch was a little undersized on mine. I opened it up a bit and now have a better lock than from the factory. So I think unless you went past your tracing lines from the rebar file you are probably still slightly undersized in your notch.

Maybe you can take a picture of your file when you get home. Or at least compare it to my pic.   :tu:

I'll have to check it out.  Probably will whenever I decide to swap it with the knife blade, if I do.  I'm not a fan of taking all the tools out as it can be a pain to get them back in.  I may try tomorrow.  I checked it out, and it does look like the back of the notch may be slightly rounded.

Well I straightened out the back area of the lock notch on the file.  Forgot to get a pic though.  It now stays locked, but there is considerable play unfortunately.  Not a big deal functionally I don't think, but it bugs me nonetheless.  Everything is tight in that handle too, and I have to deploy the file to easily get the middle tools out.  They're almost nail breakers if I don't.  Oh, and I swapped the knife and file, so the file does deploy more easily as I have a better grip on it, and the knife deploys just fine as well.

Notice the slightly thicker handle on the right.

Glad you got it worked out as well M        Too bad about the play and that the tools are hard to deploy. Maybe you can find a happy medium between easier deployment and the wiggle of the file.

Anyway good for you for going for it, that's how we gain confidence and learn    :hatsoff:

Thanks Steve :)  I am happier with the easier access to the file at least.  My MT need/use is low normally, so it really shouldn't be a big deal.

Haha, yeah, that was my attempt the other night, but failed.  It doesn't work, and I didn't dare to mark up the surface even more.  Wish I'd thought of swapping positions before doing it.

Carrying one I haven't in a while, the Reave.  It's a hybrid, sort of the best of both LM worlds so to speak :tu:  It's fairly light too, which is nice.
