Any way add a keychain ring to a knife?
on: August 07, 2016, 03:43:46 PM
Is there a way to add a small keychain ring to an Alox knife without having to dismantle it? I dunno,  like hacking the flat head screwdriver for instance

This is the missing piece on the harvester i want to buy

Thanks

Nothing I know of but I'm not very knowledgeable. There was talk about using the corks as an attachment point but that's not an alternative for Alox knives.

The tools are rather hard and you might have trouble drilling them.

Would a small pouch work? Just a thin leather sheath where you could in turn attach a keyring (or do you want a lanyard so you won't drop the knife while handling it?).

Mmm that's an idea yeh.  The thing is i'm looking to the Harvester which is already a 3   layer SAK i believe.  I may use the bottle opener wire stripper and attached a piece of nylon fishing line.  Wondering if it will close properly though

You could drill a hole in either side of the back rivet and make a lanyard bail for it like the soldier. Or have someone mod it with a hollow rivet.

I don't have any Alox knives but I think it would be a bit too tight even for fishing line. I would be afraid that it would pinch between the tool and scale and damage/break the line.

I seem to recall my brother did a rather brutal mod where he drilled indentations in the scales and used that to attach a bail he made himself. The holes need not be very deep to secure a bail well enough. Another idea could be to do something with a strong glue.

The easiest way to do this would be to drill out and remove the pin and the spacer and replace the spacer with a keyring one, and then repeen it with a new pin. This isn't too difficult a job if you have the bits (which I'm sure you could get on this forum), and a drill and hammer.

The other option is to do the above except just remove the pin and replace it with a hollow rivet. Having done this myself I can attest it is the more difficult option, but is very satisfying.

Thanks for your suggestions.  They do all make sense but really i'm not gonna go into self modding a knife.  This thing has been professionally assembled and even if anyone can mod a SAK easily with the proper tool I don't necessarily trust myself into doing a good enough job.
I saw a video of a modded Alox where the scissor spring was not very snappy for instance.  Mods will always have this 'degraded'  feeling imo
I was just looking for a clever hack advice going around the mod problem but it may as well not exist at all
I,  for instance,  wonder if one can easily solder a small piece of metal holding a ring anywhere on the knife

Anyway,  i'll think about a solution once i get my Harvester

The scales are probably a no-go. You would first have to grind away the oxidized top layer, then solder aluminum.

http://m.wikihow.com/Solder-Aluminum

The spacers are aluminum as well, and I suppose you wouldn't solder heat treated steel by definition.

If you simply want to secure the knife while transporting it (not while in use), you could use the same hack as another member here: Let a lanyard nestle between two spacers against the tang of closed tool, lead the lanyard along the backspring, let it nestle between the other ends of the same spacers against the tang of the opposite tool, before following the tools back to where the lanyard starts. Secure the thing with a sliding knot, and you have what seemed to me (when looking at his pictures) a surprisingly secure setup.

Trust me on this one - after having handled any of Syph's mods, almost every ordinary SAK will feel slightly degraded

But maybe you could add a keychain ring the same way many people put a clip on their Alox knives- screw or glue it onto the scales?

@Steinar I'm trying to understand the method that you describe. English is not my primary language and I'm having a hard time figuring out where this lanyard should be placed. It does sound interesting though

@Tomcat Well I'm sure you are right about modded SAK. It's just I haven't  seen one and I'm a bit skeptical. I do wonder how much it would cost me though

@Spark Arg!!! what a nice picture!!! This red one looks awesome

I stole the image from http://smg.photobucket.com/user/UnknownVT/media/SAK/FarmerSoldierSpartan_Thick_S.jpg.html to illustrate. The lanyard would go around the knife lengthwise in the area I marked with the yellow line/rectangle in the picture.

Oh i see, thanks for the illustration. I just ordered the knife from Amazon. They had it at a good price. Now I guess I'll try doing this with some nylon fishing line

No problem. I think the guy who came up with the idea used paracord or 2.5 mm cord or something like that.

Edit: In other words, that's the reason for my mentioning the sliding knot. The tools in the layer used for securing the knife cannot be used while the lanyard is attached.

I think this is what Steiner means:

It seems secure and quite neat.
