Day 23

The problem with buying a 10 dollar knife is that I don't know what it is made out of other than the presumption that it is the cheapest grade of stainless they could find.  I have been using it on fruit and it is not taking on any sort of patina.

The benefit on the Sowbelly is that you can open everything with the right hand, but you're right, it does sit very high. Here's a hasty, straight-on picture of my carry for today. Hopefully you can see the outline of the sheepsfoot blade here. It does not sit much higher than the clip blade, in fact only about 1mm higher where the clip blade... uh, clips. :) Finally capturing the reflection of my phone in the knife was a good thing here, I think it helps show the blade outline.

Day 24

Case #47 medium stockman again! This one in smooth orange bone with sloped bolsters.

It's either Chinese 7cr17mov or 440A, they are the same thing.
A little more carbon & chrome than 420HC.
Not bad stuff.

I have a couple of Cold Steel versions but with RA, they are pretty hard for me to close.

Case "Mini Hawkbill" again today.  With college over for the week, I'll carry something else tomorrow, I think.  But, this knife is becoming perfect for me--heck, I might even carry it the rest of the challenge.

This Okapi is a small non ratchet slip joint with a sheepsfoot marketed as the "biltong knife".

For $3 you get something that cuts.

As predicted I've put my Case Stockman in my pocket today.  Hopefully you can see where I've had to adjust the kick on the sheepsfoot blade.

My Dad's Old Timer 340T's also had a very proud sheepfoot blade. I don't know the reasoning as to why but seems to be common on some stockmans.

I think much of it nowadays comes down to cost savings, at least in the case of large production manufacturers.  I suspect less labor is spent fine-tuning the fit than it was in years past for these brands.  Back in those days, Schrade was pumping out knives in huge numbers, and they may have been doing the same.

This is where you benefit from the more expensive "boutique" brands, if you will, and one reason why their higher price can be justified.
