Revenge is sweet. >:D

Coincidently I just got a package through from Moonraker.  Used my Canoe to open it up and get my new Barlow. :D

I hadn't realised this one was quite so small, but I'm a fan of smaller knives so that's OK.

Assuming your Canoe is the same length as mine, then that Barlow is quite a bit shorter than the two-blade one I've got.  Cute little knife.

The Barlow looks tiny indeed!  Nice pair of RRs you have there, Gareth!

Cheers Terry (and everyone else).  The little Barlow is indeed tiny, basically the same size as a Peanut.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Traditional Challenge Day 11

Canal Street Cannitler w/D2 blades & Amber Stage Bone scales

Well built by Queen in their excellent D2 tool steel as a hybrid of the traditional canoe and whittler patterns, this knife is a bit of an enigma.  A large, thick, two-spring-wide main spear is paired with thin spey and sheepsfoot blades.  It's beautiful, useful knife, but I have a hard time considering it a whittler, as the spey and sheepsfoot blades are a bit large for fine work.  The heavy-duty spear also sits a bit too proud of the frame when folded to make for comfortable whittling.  Regardless, I do like to carry it simply because the three choices of blades cover a wide variety of tasks, similar to a stockman in use.

It seems I've missed out on many that I've had my eye on for the same reason.  But, unfortunately we can't have them all.  I guess that's actually the nice thing about many traditional slipjoints and their collect-ability, if you care about such a thing.  It kind of crazy, IMO, but I suppose if we didn't have the collectors, the market would not be what it is today.  I normally just buy what catches my eye and looks like something I will use.  I buy enough of them that I'm also a collector of sorts, but to nowhere near the extreme of some.

I watched the retail prices of the Cannitler double very quickly after I bought that one in 2011.

You're right can't have them all.
The Cannitler & a black micarta stockman were on my wish list when CSC closed it's doors.
Just couldn't pull the trigger at the time.

Here are a couple of shots showing the construction detail of the Cannitler.  You can see the extreme difference in thickness of the main vs. secondary/tertiary blades:

Neat!!! Never saw one!!!  :like: :like:

Only thing I have that's close is a "Gunboat Canoe"  made for by the NKCA club by Rodgers/Wostenholm in England but it lacks the cool Whittler blades.

(Image removed from quote.)

Yes, it is similar to a Gunboat in function.  I suppose the main difference would be the thickness of the main blade and frame.  The gunboats I've seen have a 1 spring or 1 layer width main blade.  Does your gunboat have a liner between the layers?  The Cannitler doesn't.

That old Rodgers is very nice!

Thanks!  No, it's the traditional Gunboat construction.  :salute:

Man, that is beefy! Cool design, and a beautiful knife. Like Dean, when I started getting into traditionals a few years ago, I wanted to get a Canal Street knife, and had picked out this and the half moon trapper... but they were a bit pricey compared to Case and I just never got around to buying them. It's a pity, but oh well. You win some, you lose some.
May it be as the Pattern has chosen.

OK, well actually, what you show there is what I was expecting.  All tangs the same width (1 layer), and a spacer (liner) between the springs.  I didn't really describe that well when I asked.  Like many traditional whittlers, the Cannitler has no spacer between the springs.

A old brand, about like Imperial I think. Never owned one but they have sold a ton of knives over the years esp the Girl Scout type knives.

What's the word on old Kutmaster knives ? I've been seeing some of these while I've been browsing.

All the woodgrain Delrin handled knives (and even a couple real wood Buck-like foldinghunters, Proto exclusive, however) you see that are American made, with Proto or Klein Tools on them are Kutmasters. As I said before about the story behind my Klein hawkbill, they are very, very tough, as that one was run over by a few ton piece of mine equipment (apparently, the miner, that cuts up the coal), yet except for a slightly warped blade is unscathed (heck, even the Delrin handles have yet to show wear, despite being carried a lot over 40 odd years) My great-uncle carried a modded Kutmaster electrician's knife (a ground down second main blade, as to cut yarn that would get tangled in the spools as he worked at a yarn factory, replaces the wire stripper/screwdriver) for over fifty years, and I inherited that knife, which in fact, he carried until the day he passed.  While I've never carried it, it is still in good shape.

However, both my Kleins have minor lock trouble. The little sheepsfoot is the worst, and the hawkbill has slight play.  The blade can partly close with the linerlock engaged a small amount on both.   I never owned a brand new one, so I don't know if this was the way they were made, or due to poor maintenance and/or abuse.

All of my Klein and Kutmaster knives are carbon steel (two Kleins and a Kutmaster), so I don't have any experience with their stainless, and I think everything they make in the "Workman" series that I like is offered in carbon and stainless.  The carbon gets, and holds a great edge easily though.

This evening I carried the Opinel No. 6. Carbone  Most of the day, it was the LF&C Whittler.

Opinels, in my opinion, are the best value in a folding knife, especially the carbon ones. This one cost me under $10 with tax from a local store.
